Excited to share our work on #AncientRNA from alcohol-preserved lungs, recovering the oldest human RNA virus genome (an 18th-century rhinovirus). Our study shows that viral RNA remnants persist in centuries-old tissue, opening new ways to study virus evolution and historical disease #Paleovirology🫁🦠

Wanting to do some paleovirology of your own? We recently published HI-FEVER, enabling users to run their own fast searches for endogenous viral elements.

Huge thanks to @humanceae.bsky.social, @emma-harding.bsky.social, José Gabriel and Cormac.

We hope this helps others working on retroviral domains, paleovirology, or TE functional genomics.

🙏 Thanks to @cnag-eu.bsky.social and @annaesteveco.bsky.social for support.

We welcome feedback, questions, or collaborations as we submit to a peer-reviewed journal.

During his 36-year career at @fredhutch.bsky.social, Dr. Michael Emerman made fundamental discoveries about #HIV.

🍾 Dr. Emerman made a lasting impact in #immunology, including co-pioneering the field of paleovirology, and we offer a huge congratulations on his retirement! bit.ly/3GrwEZQ

That was a lovely tribute - had to admit I hadn't realised he was quite that old (or maybe its just that I'm getting old...) might be a few people dispute the "founder of paleovirology" title though!

Our latest study uncovers a viral domestication event from ~75 million years ago, where viral genes enable parasitoid wasps to protect their eggs they lay within dipteran hosts!

I'd like to offer a late but sincere thanks to Rob Gifford, one of the pioneers of paleovirology, who visited Vilnius University's Life Sciences Center and gave a seminar last week.
Thanks for the talk and the discussions. I hope to see you on Bluesky in the near future!
