Anthony D. Allen came to Hawaii around 1810, after purchasing his freedom from slavery. Here he became a respected business owner and had close ties to some of the ali'i. No image taken of Allen during his lifetime is known to exist today. This artist's. sketch from the 1820s shows what part of O'ahu looked like when he was alive. Barack Obama is the first Black American U.S. president and the first U.S. president from Hawaii. He was born at Kapi'olani Medical Center in 1961 and graduated from Punahou School. He later graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. Prior to becoming president in 2009, Obama served as an Illinois state senator, then a U.S. senator representing that state. BLACK HISTORY MONTH PBS HAWAII @pbshawaii While he has lived away from Hawaii for many years, Obama wrote this about his time growing up here: "The opportunity that Hawaii offered -to experience a variety of cultures in a climate of mutual respect -became an integral part of my world view and a basis for the values that I hold most dear." Carlotta Stewart Lai was the first Black American school principal in Hawaii. Born in Brooklyn in 1881, Lai moved to Honolulu at the age of 18 where she attended O'ahu College (now Punahou School). In 1909, Lai became principal of Ko'olau Elementary School on Kaua'i. Later, she would become principal of Hanamã'ulu School, now the site of Kaua'i's King Kaumuali'i Elementary School.
