I was born in 1980, so I was only kind of aware of the Public Enemy/Tipper/PMRC stuff until the 1992 campaign brought my attention to Gore, and the depth of my music knowledge was no deeper than the stratum of Warrant and Anthrax. I just liked the funny songs that said fuck a lot.

I'm reading Evan Dando's book, and there's a good anecdote about how, as schoolboys, the Lemonheads got their punk records directly from Tipper Gore. Jesse Peretz's dad edited The New Republic, and she sent him records to try to get him to publish a story about the PMRC. He gave them to his son.
