Pottery from the Egyptian cemetery of Tarkhan, dating from the Late Predynastic (c. 3350–3150 BC) to Late Period (664–332 BC). This indicates continuous use over ~3000 years, displaying its potential for examining Egyptian funerary practices over time.

I told my students about the Min statue in the Ashmolean the other day (in the context of Petrie) and their faces were very much "We didn't know about sockets for giant penises before today and we were HAPPY." They should probably just be grateful I didn't say the words erect or ejaculation.

Interesting! Reminds me a bit of the Egyptian Predynastic “bull” or “elephant” amulets in the 4th millennium BC

A similar approach was taken in Egypt. By georeferencing 1910s maps of the late Predynastic to Early Dynastic cemetery of Tarkhan with the contemporary landscape, archaeologists identified a previously unknown structure, likely a large mastaba 4/6

Dr. Max Fomitchev-Zamilov reports tabletop sonofusion neutron data and a route to commercial compact fusion, disputes claims of extreme precision in Predynastic Egyptian stone vessels, and proposes testable hypotheses for megalith transport and stonework. #Fusion #Archaeology #M
Physicist Advances Tabletop Fusion, Challenges ‘Ancient Precision’ Claims, and Outlines Testable Paths for Megalith Engineering
Nuclear engineer and entrepreneur Dr. Max Fomitchev‑Zamilov discusses his sonofusion research, neutron detection results, and plans to commercialize a compact fusion system, while presenting a metrological study that disputes claims of extreme precision in Predynastic Egyptian stone vessels. He further proposes testable hypotheses for ancient stoneworking and transport, including abrasive drilling, resonant granite chambers, and electrostatic lift, while urging rigorous on-site measurements and isotopic analyses.

"The earliest examples of painting eyes on eyelids can be traced to ancient Egyptian burial practices, with the use of kohl and malachite eye paint dating back to predynastic times (c. 5000–4000 BCE)."

You might want to revisit your cultural references. 😁

I feel like it did the Alien/Aliens thing where slightly shifting genres avoided a rehash, more of the Medjai/Ardath Bey meant more MENA people as good guys for a change, I liked the comic touches and the initial Predynastic flashback, plus for whatever reason it's loaded with hot people.

Also as an aside, I like how the Mummy movies hit just in passing that Egypt is FUCKING OLD. Mummy Returns revolves around what's get this, technically PREDYNASTIC stuff, it's ancient history for Imhotep let alone Rick and Evie. By comparison stuff in Dragon Emperor is from around 200ish BCE.

I'm thoroughly enjoying teaching Ancient Egypt for the first time in something like 13 years, and I won't lie - a huge part of that enjoyment is finding all of the things they put legs and feet on

Well, at least I'm not too out of step on this one! I haven't heard of such a site, no. But as I said, I don't do much predynastic stuff.

... and there doesn't (afaik) seem to be any direct overlap in sign-inventories, or even in the way they work (hieroglyphs are consonantal, cuneiform is syllabic). So it looks to me more like hieroglyphs may have been inspired by but not based on cuneiform. But I'm not an expert on the Predynastic!
