Self-pub (a series that's often recommended on r/printsf and I thought I'd finally check it out)

Do you mean the printsf subreddit? I find that good but there’s not much discussion of recent work.

It would be an understatement to say that Reddit is a land of contrasts, but lurking on r/printSF continues to be delightful. You don't have to be a professional writer with a skilled editor to talk about culture in interesting, insightful, and unapologetically subjective ways.

Another great resource for sci-fi/fantasy/thrillers is reddit.com/r/printsf it's where like half of my next to read list comes from :)

(The SF is speculative fiction not sci-fi as I didn't realize for honestly years)

As a snob who has abandoned one of the most frequently recommended books from the r/printSF community several times because the author's egregious overuse of italics drives me insane, I'm actually very qualified to determine when literary fiction vs genre fiction criticality is appropriate.

If you want your brain absolutely cracked wide open, take a big hit of this. Jeff Vandermeer Southern Reach Series.

It does feel though like it's a very lazy or reductionist way of waiting for stuff to pop its head above the parapet.

OTOH I do engage in threads on /r/printSF and /r/rscifi where I do dig out recommendations that sound tasty.

Online is really bad these days, but I truly admire the patience and good humor of the overlapping r/printSF + r/WeirdLit + r/horrorlit communities who are so kind to the people who ask for "Event Horizon but a novel" or "True Detective S1 vibes" recommendations on a daily basis.

@aptshadow.bsky.social I think this guy understood and liked your portrayal of humans in CoT (I took a lot of glee in it myself, at least before you REALLY scared the 👖 off us very late in the day)

If you don't shy away from reddit you might like his view :)

Children of the Sky should have won some sort of award but so many people wouldn't know good soft SF (in the "social focus/exploration of speculative ways of existence" sense) if it bit them in the ass, if I'm judging by /r/printsf

some circumstances the nightside could be frozen over, but it would still be as habitable as the Arctic. The temperate part in such circumstances is actually near the substellar point, not the terminator. Some discussions I've found are at www.reddit.com/r/printSF/co...

I think b. is why if r/printsf loves a book I almost certainly won't.

I think they *LOVE* world building, regardless of how good the pros are, or if the story is worth telling.
i sometimes check out discussions of popular novels and my sense is that reddit:
a. dislikes any novel whose prose is stylistic or poetic
b. is obsessive about world-building and doesn't get that some settings are allegorical
c. feels that any novel with a clear message is "moralizing"

I definitely feel like I probably know the subreddit (/r/printsf) and I can probably already tell what books they recommended (Dune, it's always fucking Dune), and I agree it's exhausting that people just recommend Dune and like Hyperion, but still.

Over on /r/PrintSF I have noticed a recurring phenomenon where somebody asks for book recs about subject X from the last 5 or 10 years, and half the recs are about !X and the other half are all 25-75 years old.
