It all depends on how much rain in summer we get. I kayak fairly often in summer and avoid beaches until a few days after rain as a general rule, but you see scores swimming in beaches with do not swim alerts on safeswim website. Interesting article below.

I always check Safeswim (and more commonly swim at Blockhouse Bay - the sea surface tends to be flatter which is better for swimming 'lengths') - after heavy rain both are polluted for 1-2 days, but it's safe far more often than not. I swim every 1-2 weeks (weekly when I can) year-round.

I’m just happy that AC are monitoring/modelling the conditions. Safeswim is a huge step up from nearly every other location in AoNZ that runs with ‘it was fine last week’.

I don’t think it’s as bad as has been reported and Central Interceptor will help solve a bunch of the inner city issues, once completed in 2026.
