Duck pics. They've taken over the mirror pond now and no other ducks are allowed near.
One of the babies even had a go at chasing some mallards about! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree obviously.
I did think they looked a bit lonely out on the empty pond though 🥹 #nzbirds

Discworld QOTD, from Witches Abroad

"'I used to come over here quite often to look at her books,' Magrat confessed. 'And... and she liked to cook foreign food and no-one else round here would eat it, so I'd come up to keep her company.'

'Ah-ha! Curryin' favour!' snapped Granny."
Discworld QOTD, from Going Postal

"They say that the prospect of being hanged in the morning concentrates a man’s mind wonderfully; unfortunately, what the mind inevitably concentrates on is that it is in a body that, in the morning, is going to be hanged."
Discworld QOTD, from Moving Pictures

"‘Er, I was just wondering, Mr. Dibbler... what is my motivation for this scene?’

‘Motivation?’

‘Yes. Er, I got to know, see,’ said Rock.

‘How about: I’ll fire you if you don’t do it properly?’

Rock grinned. ‘Right you are, Mr. Dibbler,’ he said."

Word of the day, should you be feeling a little huffish, is ‘apanthropy’ (18th century): a love of solitude and the desire to be away from other people.

Dick Van Dyke making it to 100 after tackling his alcohol problem and quitting smoking in his 50's is a heart warmer because sometimes you might think middle age fixes you into your habits, that it's too late or whatever. Maybe not? Maybe it's all a learning journey.

As @captcaffiend.bsky.social pointed out recently, when psychological abuse is factored in, our violence stats increase to one in two women (55%).

We should be noting this stat in every story like the below.
This isn’t a one-off, it’s a demonstrable cultural norm - we need to write about that, too.
‘Walking on eggshells’: Woman abused, strangled by police officer husband to be paid $58k
The officer married the woman after meeting her when he oversaw her police complaint.

Oligarchy (noun):

A government of and by a few at the top, who exercise power for their own benefit. Their power and wealth increase as they make laws that favor themselves, manipulate financial markets, and create monopolies that put more wealth into their pockets.

Deeply disappointed to hear that the BBC has pushed out one of the most brilliant presenters in all of science communication for speaking with integrity and honor in support of human rights and dignity.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

When I messaged my friend group that I was crying in my car while I waited for the AA, she sprang into action.

Me so old, I remember sitting in Nandor Tanczos' Parliamentary office discussing the saliva tests available at the time and their false positive rates. From memory, a shittonne of these saliva tests were made by a fundamentalist Corporate Christian backing.
