Don't forget that leaves left alone, although they are never lonely is both mulch/compost and a home for springtails and beetles and others that behind the scenes save us from bad things. 🪲

I transferred the new impulse buy isopods I got a week or so ago to an actual container now that the springtails have established themselves, and the lil dirt shrimp already seem so happy! 🪲 🦐

I love that Poduromorpha are called “plump” springtails. It’s perfect. Just look at this ridiculous little animal. What is going on here.

I’ve shared lots of globular springtails, but this is my first cooperative Entomobryomorpha that posed long enough for a decent photo.

What are the odds of poking your camera into the foliage and finding an entire active ecosystem in one spot? A spider, springtails, and a velvet mite. Seriously, grab a magnifying glass and explore the soils around you. They'll be around long after we are gone.

Today I found a few Haeterius clown beetles under a rock with a Formica ant colony. These beetles are “ant guests” / myrmecophiles, and the ants often feed them. The beetles are tiny though, even compared to the ants. Also check out the springtails. Thanks to Joe Parker for the 🪲 ID. Woodstock, NY.

Symphypleona, or globular springtails, are ridiculous little creatures. They have this weird lever-like structure called a furcula that lets them spring off the ground and launch themselves into the air to escape danger. Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXeS... 🌿 #Collembola #虫 #macrophotography 🪲🪳

UK Springtail People!
Anyone recognise this Isotomid? Quite large at around 2.0 - 2.5mm or so, collected from a large patch of leaf litter. I didn't see if there was a furca or not, but I didn't see any springing from it, so perhaps not?

Apple time in the Millipede terrarium

(It is also inhabited by very large millipedes that are sleeping, as well as beetles, small centipedes, isopods, worms, springtails and many other critters.)
