A Steller sea lion pup enjoys an afternoon snack, courtesy of mom. Stellers are born at breeding rookeries further north. They weigh ~23 kg at birth—the same as a large dog, but they grow fast on their mother’s fat-rich milk. This pup was probably born in 2024.

Lots of STJAs in my area and I see them all the time but never knew they could hold an acorn in their throat like that.
Your post got me to wondering about competition for acorns between STJAs & ACWOs. And I read that Stellers & Western Scrub Jays will sometimes raid ACWO granaries.

We call our hedge the bird condo. Sparrows mostly live there. About a dozen Eurasian ring neck doves visit daily along with the stellers, towees and chikadees. Unfamiliar with scrub jays. Off to Google...

the new prehistoric planet season referring to stellers sea cows & giant moas as 'ice age sea cows' and 'giant ice age birds' or whatever is funny. like its not wrong but its slightly misleading; you wouldnt guess that those guys survived up through the entirety of the middle ages
