just randomly remembered a thing that happened like 25 years ago with my dad lmao
white text on a black background i forget the exact details, but i remember one time when i was about 15 or 16, i was in the 4wd with dad - mitsubishi pajero, with a big bull bar on it - and we’re going along the stoke bypass in nelson, past the old wearable arts building, just before the roundabout between tahunanui drive and annesbrook drive, and this driver overtook or cut him off in a stupid way or something and i guess dad was having a bad day maybe because when we pull up at the next roundabout, dad just hits this other car, on purpose.

Near the water’s edge at Nelson’s Tāhunanui beach, Barney Aupa’au recites a whakataukī in his native Samoan, white puffs of breath following his words. “La malu le vai i lou finagalo,” which translates to “may your mind be cool like water”.

A bit more 'cross country' to get to Tahunanui beach for a swim. Hard recommend. Stop for a rest. ⛱️🌊
A sandy scene with clumps of tussock & leafy trees further back. There's a clear path through the sand & a white roof building nestled in the trees. More Phoenix palms are in the background. A sandy wooden boardwalk disappears through the tussock sand dunes & leads to the ocean. A little peek of Nelson is visible where it meets the Nelson Haven on the left. My bike parked against a wooden post. More sand dunes behind the bike & the ocean is visible beyond the dunes. Tahunanui beach. A massive expanse of pale yellow sand & a blue ocean. A couple of people are visible in the distance & mountain ranges are just visible on the other side of the bay.

There's also a nice section away from SH6 along the edge of Monaco, where you can stop at the pub if it's that time of day. 🚴‍♂️🍻
Then it's away from the coast & through Tahunanui, past the airport on the left (yes you can bike to the airport.)
The Honest Lawyer pub in Monaco. A park bench looking out over a gentle part of the bay, the pub again on the other side of the bay. There's clumps of tussock in the foreground & the sea is flat & blue. The bay stretches further on ahead but the bike path is sign posted right, away from the coast. A wide sealed path alongside an estuarine inlet on the right. Low mangrove style trees emerge from the water & there are patches of brown water reeds. Nelson airport is on the left, but not in the shot.

Then it's a whizz down under a bridge, & off the rail route & alongside the road for a while. Then over an overpass to the junction at Tahunanui. It's either right onto the coastal route, or left to the railway route. I went left, back on the old railway (the return journey is on the coastal route.)

A bike path in the center, with a main road on the left, separated by a grassy berm. The bike path wiggles then rises up & turns right over an overpass that can be seen crossing the road up ahead. At a junction. The small sign reads Richmond via railway route 7km to the left, & Richmond via coastal route 8km to the right. There's a big road sign on the right as we are alongside state highway 6 now. A straight paved path with an area of green grass on the left & an avenue of leafy trees along the path on the right. There's a hint of autumn colour in the trees.
