Trumpetfish more often selected similarly coloured fish to ‘shadow’ (swim alongside when hunting).
Doing so reduced the anti-predator responses of prey.

Aulostomus chinensis #yellow #trumpetfish have a really interesting shadow-stalking #ambush technique. They can create a vacuum by rapidly expanding their mouths and throat, swallowing their prey whole.

Nice dive off Ulua this morning! Pretty good viz, octopus, a few nudis, a four foot long cornetfish that decided to hunt with us for a while (using us as cover) a few trumpetfish/eel hunting parties, and a 5 foot 'awa getting cleaned by some cleaner wrasse. Good way to start the day. :)

Back from a walking/birding holiday in Fuerteventura, but Morrow Jable harbour always worth a look. Last year Manta Rays and Barracuda, this year Trumpetfish and Loggerhead Turtles.
