A large gathering of locals at a urban high point collectively tried spotting it for a long time.
I love that moment when someone spots an object, and a wave of help moves through the crowd to let others spot it too!

A photo of a comet setting in the West on Oct 13 2024. The comet is Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS, also known as the Great Comet of 2024 and formally designated as C/2023 A3. The comets bright head is near bottom center of the image, and it's glowing tail stretches upward on a diagonal to just left of top center before it fades. The overall color of the comet head and tail are a yellow gold, as is the layer of cloud it is seen through after sunset. The sky is peppered with little stars, with a couple brighter ones shining through the comet tail. Toward the upper left corner there is an added red circle that shows the location of a faint fuzzy patch near some brighter stars. The fuzzy patch is a very distant globular cluster (designated M5) of many many stars at a great distance (24,500 light years).

That's actually the most impressive part.

Light pollution always ruined my attempts to really get into backyard astronomy. I've got a few good pictures of some major things like the tsuchinshan atlas comet a couple years ago, but I needed to drive out of town to get a faint picture.

When the orbital plane of the comet and Earth roughly align, the otherwise faint heavy dust left behind a comet appears as a spike pointing towards the Sun. It is quite common among comets. Bright comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS last year had one too.

How different are these two streaks? The streak on the upper right is Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas showing an impressive dust tail. The comet is a large and dirty iceberg that entered the inner Solar System and is shedding gas and dust as it is warmed by the Sun's light. The streak on the lower left is a meteor showing an impressive evaporation trail. The meteor is a small and cold rock that entered the Earth's atmosphere and is shedding gas and dust as it is warmed by molecular collisions. The meteor was likely once part of a comet or asteroid -- perhaps later composing part of its tail. The meteor was gone in a flash and was only caught by coincidence during a series of exposures documenting the comet's long tail.
