Gush: - Relentless rain, weighing you down. - The Sun shines through the fog, like an eye in the sky. - Fog that looks like people, judging you from afar. - Uncharacteristic silence. Nothing moves. - Insect swarms clouding the sky. - Clear skies, beautiful stars even early in the afternoon. Didn’t this constellation look different yesterday? - Whipping wind, trying to steal your things. Burgeon: - A pleasant breeze carries the smell of wood and tree sap. - The Sun shines emotionally — shame, you think, or anger. - Just the right temperature. You could get used to this. - A chiming melody out of nowhere. - White fluffy clouds, the definition of comfort. - Everything is scarily vibrant. Leaves are too green. Flowers smell too intoxicating. - The trees feel happy. You swear they giggle. Hush: - The Sun shines proud. It’s too hot and you want to do nothing. - An anemic, lifeless breeze. Its cool air soon turns warm. - Light scatters and refracts. Your eyes burn, exhausted. - The air ripples, the sky pulses with heat. - The light carries on well into the night, painting the sky red. - Flower petals sizzle under the Sun. They give off tendrils of smoke and the world smells burnt. - A rumbling from the bowels of the earth. Gloom: - Persistent darkness, threatening to swallow your light sources. - Everything is frozen, sticky and slippery. A sharp stillness. - A drab day, like someone sucked the color from the world. - Whispers that start where your light ends. - Wind that rustles the branches of bare trees. They sound hollow. - Roiling shadows even in broad daylight. Well, as broad as daylight gets these days. - The Sun doesn’t rise at all today.$

After a while, with the throbbing in his knee virtually gone, he began to get drowsy. By then he had a folder of the best photos, all labelled and ready to be printed, so he leaned his head back on the cushion and let his mind drift. The ring on his finger sparkled in the afternoon sunlight slanting in through the windows.

They’d slipped these rings on each other’s fingers at the shop, decided they were it—and just never taken them off. Kinda like the way they’d been with each other since the day they’d met, taking each other in, body and soul, and never taking—

“Off!” Stede cried from down the hall. “Come on, get off. Fuck!”

“Babe?” He remembered to stand up slowly, but the second he clocked that his knee was fine, he legged it down the corridor. “What’s up?”

Stede was in the bathroom, furiously swirling liquid soap into a stopped up sink. “I can’t get my ring off.”

“Oh.” All his half-dream thoughts rushed over him. He was all in. But maybe Stede... “You want to take your ring off?”

A day late, a dollar short. At this point everyone knows I've been so sick, so we're just happy I've found the ability to write again. It was scary, cuz I went days not able to 😅. Anyway, here's a paragraph I just re-wrote that mentions Jimin. #WIPWednesday #starshinewrites

Over the years, their magic had grown, had deepened, tying itself tightly in the core of their very existence. Magic stopped being something they got to use and became another piece of them. Something that they were. Always at their fingertips and bubbling across the surface of them. The more time they’d spent together, the more comfortable they’d become. They’d learned each other’s rhythms at the same time they learned about themselves. What made them tick, what made them blend together. Their magic was so entwined that sometimes Yoongi didn’t notice it, the same way he didn’t notice his own. It had made it easier, he thought, to learn each other’s innate gifts as well. Yoongi had never been able to master Jimin’s inherent ability to charm anyone he came across, nor did he have Namjoon's phytokenises and dedication to plant life. But he’d learned to recognize the pulse of their magic when it wasn’t blurred into his own. Jungkook was the exception. He absorbed it all, learned it all, without issue. With Jungkook, it was as if magic whispered in his mind, wanting him to know all it’s secrets. There was no skill that Jungkook couldn’t master. Yoongi thought that was fair, given he’d been 13 when this whole nightmare had started, and didn’t get the same freedom the others had.

One of those talks was about them moving to a new place, together. Daniel brought it up. He said he wanted a place that was theirs from the start and without a pause. It was lovely.

“We do still have Night Island,” Armand reminded him. “You do, in fact.”

“Yeah, that still falls in the ‘pause’ category, babe.”

(Babe. Daniel calls him ‘babe’ again. It feels… it feels more like coming home than anything Armand has ever felt, with the exception of holding Daniel in his arms again, when he thought he never would; kissing him again; making love to him again; having his voice narrate a commentary to his life again.)

“And besides,” Daniel went on that night, curling his hands around a cup of warm blood, shifting a little in a way that betrayed his nerves. “I’m a Boomer New Yorker—”

“You’re from California.”

“—and it’s basically Florida, so I figured we’d move there when I, uh, retire.”

Armand tipped his head.

“Retire?”

“Yeah, I was trying to make it a euphemism for staging my death, but I guess it didn’t land. In my defence, I’m only halfway through my first mug.” He tapped the ceramic (custom-designed to say Do feed the gremlin after midnight) with a claw. “So yeah, I figured we could move back in once I bow out. And for now, we could, you know. Get a new place of our own.”
