Youth Forum slams Walvis Bay over rot and ruin
The Walvis Bay Rural Constituency Youth Forum has accused the town’s municipality of poor service delivery, citing neglect of basic infrastructure and sanitation. Forum chairperson Patricia Munyala says Namibia looks up to the town as a breadbasket and an economic hub, but Walvis Bay is affected by poor sanitation, irregular waste collection, unreliable water supply, a poor sewerage system, and other critical service deficiencies. The group organised a demonstration at the town for residents yesterday to express their concerns on poor service delivery. Although members of the community did not show up, the group said it was determined to speak out on behalf of the community. “It seems none of the municipality’s management is worried or bothered. Garbage is lying around the streets because you refused to deliver the essential services which we ratepayers at Walvis Bay pay for. “With the increasing influx of economic activities in and around Walvis Bay, the growing port activities, the fishing industry growth, the mining activities and the coastal zone landscape which contribute to the ever-growing tourism attraction activities, we cannot continue to have Walvis Bay in this condition,” Munyala said. She mentioned poor road conditions, saying it poses safety hazards and leads to frequent vehicle damage. “The commercial trucks that transport goods from other countries are facing severe damage due to the road that is in poor condition, causing a decline in economic activities which will affect Namibia negatively. “Despite funds allocation of about N$250 million to N$400 million from the Roads Authority (RA) and the Road Fund Administration (RFA) to the Walvis Bay Municipality for road maintenance since late mid-2024 to date, there are no visible and tangible improvements and developments at Walvis Bay,” Munyala said. Deputy chairperson of the forum Travo Tjiriange expressed disappointment in residents not joining the demonstration, saying the problem affects the entire town. “It is disappointing that we have called upon the community to join the petition, as it affects the entire Walvis Bay community. About 60% of the problem is within Kuisebmond. “I expected more of Kuisebmond to join. The future of Namibia lies in our hands, and we cannot sit idle when we are dealing with such issues,” he said. The group said it would invite minister of urban and rural development James Sankwasa to the town to observe the conditions. When approached for comment, the municipality said it will revert in due course. The post Youth Forum slams Walvis Bay over rot and ruin appeared first on The Namibian.
