We are getting to the point where "Colorado looked at me funny one time!" is going to justify standing for anyone.

People don't necessarily understand how hard it is to organize and commit to nonviolence. It doesn't just happen by everyone agreeing that it's a good idea.

I think it is reasonable to fear theater kids.

To be 100% clear, I oppose violent threats against judges, Justices, or magistrates. I have my bones to pick, and we can discuss threats of court-packing, court reorganization, jurisdictional changes, changes to resource allocations, etc. But not threats of physical attacks on public servants.

I guess we were on the same unhappy wavelength this morning.

As you read this puff piece about how brave and steadfast Amy Coney Barrett is, keep in mind that the house of South Carolina circuit court judge Diane Goodstein exploded over the weekend and some of her family members barely escaped with their lives. She had recently ruled against the admin.
As justices confront harassment, death threats and an assassination attempt, Barrett declares "I'm not afraid"
In an interview with CBS News, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said of the Supreme Court's emergency orders in the Trump cases, "This isn't the final decision."

Housework is dangerous work. Currently recovering from a broken arm incurred from a fall while vacuuming cobwebs off a high ceiling. Were you assessed for concussion?

There is a lot going on but I just want to shout out Albany's Bone & Joint. A very nice person over there handled all my FMLA paperwork for me very quickly and with great kindness.

I just took a quick scan through the merits docket for this term and hooboy.

We have a good thing going here, a precious thing. I hope we do not see its destruction.

My only ideological goal as a political scientist is that my students walk away understanding American democracy and its relationship to law, with all the good and bad that entails. I hope this knowledge moves some of them to put their own oars in to create the world they want, wherever they are.

And many institutions like mine are engines of opportunity. Students, many the first in their families to go to college, leave here with much bigger dreams and ambitions than those with which they entered. And they go on to do amazing, impactful things that make NY and the world better!

One of our greatest unsung products that has consistently attracted eager international consumption is higher education. The investments that the federal government and states have made have paid off richly here and abroad.

Reminder that the United States has had, up until now, the best system of higher education in the world. It's not perfect, but it's pretty accessible for most if you consider the vast network of public institutions with in-state tuition, many of which have additional support for low-income students.

And it's not a one-time capitulation. If DOJ ever says you violated the vague and unconstitutional terms, they will take back ALL federal funds from that year and you have to return ALL private funding from donors who want their gifts back from that year. It's a never-ending protection racket.

The Act of Capitulation that Trump is demanding that all colleges and universities are to sign surrenders authority over vast areas to Trump, as the Dear Leader. www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/u...

Here I am the morning after Yom Kippur catching up on Bluesky and y'all already have me going. (Yes, it counts if it's true.)

Here's the assignment folks. Write op-eds for your local papers and campus newspapers too. Just. Say. No. This is a classic authoritarian move and risks the future of higher education and science and innovation in the US. Speak out today. No time to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...

Shel Silverstein, Overdues:

What do I do?
What do I do?
This library book is 42
Years overdue.
I admit that it's mine
But I can't pay the fine---
Should I turn it in
Or hide it again?

Personal shutdown question for those in the know: if this continues, what do you think air travel looks like by next week? I have a trip planned, but I'd be traveling as I am still recuperating from an injury, so I'm quite nervous about disruptions/getting stuck somewhere.

My consistent message to undergraduates: major in what you love, as long as it's a major that enables you to learn critical thinking, analysis, and writing skills. Pick up some numeracy too. Those skills will serve you wherever you go, from your first job to your last.

They wanted to break it. They succeeded. See? No one needs public liberal arts colleges. Students should be funneled into job training programs instead.
