It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the Bronx and Harlem at our paper shredding events — we cleared out old junk mail, built community, danced, took family portraits and enjoyed frozen treats (it still felt a lot like summer). Thanks to everyone who joined.

New book: It's an ethnography of white evangelicals in a union in Bethlehem, PA, and Black evangelicals in a number of churches in Moncure, NC. Ken notes that while his subjects view God as an authority, so too did they consider their union and labor contracts too. cc @davidmislin.bsky.social

I grew up going to Zabar's. So many of my childhood memories center around the best lox in NYC (which is saying something). With Saul Zabar's passing today, the Upper West Side has lost a legend who turned his parent's humble store into a culinary institution.

Having read Chernow’s “Grant,” I did not come away with the significance of Amos Ackerman of Georgia in Grant’s cabinet. Interesting conversation.

Stephen froze like a deer in the headlights and pretended to have connection issues because he unintentionally gave away the game plan.

“Plenary authority is complete, absolute power over a specific area or issue, with no significant limitations."

Show people this clip. This is an insane slip up.

Texas law enforcement used a nationwide network of 83,000 traffic cameras to build a case against a woman for aborting her fetus. Aborting her fetus is not a crime in Texas. And then everyone involved lied about it to the public.
This case reveals the fundamental danger of allowing companies like Flock Safety to build massive, interconnected surveillance networks that can be searched across state lines with minimal oversight. When a single search query can access more than 83,000 cameras spanning almost the entire country, the potential for abuse is staggering, particularly when weaponized against people seeking reproductive healthcare.

Oh, I know. But the typo I made frequently on a book about federalism was the "feral system" of government--which kinda tracks.

Began stage 1 of copy editing. Sweet magnetic dashboard Jesus, I found a *huge* typo. It's not the "migration and importation clause" it's the "migration or importation clause." EEKS!! 🫠 Seems minor, but I'm making, in part, a textual argument.

The federal government does and should have the authority to deploy troops into our cities—even without local consent—*when the circumstances actually warrant it.*

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com, me on why the real issue in Portland, Chicago, and elsewhere is the missing / contrived factual predicate:

Dunno man, seems a little misleading to write an article about Trump describing activity in Portland and Chicago as “insurrection” with a 33 year old photo of a burning donut shop taken in the 1992 LA Riots (sans caption explaining that) as the header on all your posts about it.

Profs should not have students do that. We know how to write these things and do it all the time. Students are inexperienced at it.
