I knew my Black friends were having the talk with their kids, so it seemed like the least I could do!! I guess I don't know if other white parents do this -- but I hope they do, esp. if their kids have friends who aren't white.

I figured it was esp impt for my kids to learn it from me, since they were NOT likely to get it first-hand -- or at least not for a while. Once they got older we started having more explicit convos about how dangerous it would be for their Black friends if they did anything to attract the cops.

I grew up going to Zabar's. So many of my childhood memories center around the best lox in NYC (which is saying something). With Saul Zabar's passing today, the Upper West Side has lost a legend who turned his parent's humble store into a culinary institution.

My kids are white, and so I figured it was never to early to start teaching them (in age-appropriate language, and approximately) that ACAB. Don't want to burden kids with adult issues, but there are ways to convey even to little littles that authority is meant to be questioned.

Allowing for pedagogy that means students want/need to do the readings is also a choice (a good choice!). And this is absolutely a choice that is possible to make at any well-funded university. It just means investing in teaching and in those who teach. 1/2
