Happy pi day to my fellow math lovers.

The caravan of digits that is pi
does not stop at the edge of the page,
but runs off the table and into the air,
over the wall, a leaf, a bird's nest, the clouds, straight into the sky,
through all the bloatedness and bottomlessness.

Parks provide space to relax and recharge but they are often not designed with seniors in mind. A new paper led by @alanjfossa looks at how different kinds of vegetation in parks near home relate to depression in older adults....

Thanks to @umichsph for showcasing our work on air pollution and health in this month's Population Healthy Podcast. As I said in the episode, my dream is that our society values clean air as a non-partisan issue since we are all obligatory breathers.

Natural settings are good for the soul but it may be that "green" is not exactly the right measure. Check out @alanjfossa's dissertation paper that looks at how climate region influences these relationships with depression! Nice job Alan!!

My noise monitoring campaign is a long standing labor of love. As I wrap it up, I see all the gifts it has given me over the past 6yrs. Seeking spaces where people live, seeing places I would not otherwise see, and pausing quietly for 5 minutes to observe the world around me.

The EPOCH Study team is so lucky to have worked with @boyazh0115 for the past few years. She's a true rock star!

This work adds nicely to @boyazh0115's 1st dissertation paper in @JAMAInternalMed last month. There she showed increased dementia risk with long-term exposures to air pollution, especially if that pollution was emitted by agricultural or wildfires....

Though there was some evidence of an increased risk of stroke with greater long-term air pollution levels, this pathway couldn't explain the increased risks of dementia that we observed in the cohort. Similarly, there was no evidence of mediation by HTN. ...

So proud of @boyazh0115 whose 2nd @umichepid dissertation paper is out in @JAMANetworkOpen! With the EPOCH Study team and data from @hrsisr, she used causal models to study if associations between incident dementia and air pollution were mediated through stroke or hypertension.

Nerd happiness is an unexpected email from a colleague/friend who says, "I had a student use your paper for an assignment in my class today and got to tell them that we were friends."

I was impressed by this sign at the Danish Design museum. Seems that there are some good life lessons in there for many of us in the environmental health field as well.

The greatest joys of my job are science, students, and travel. Pure happiness is running into one of my first PhD students, the talented @Paola_Filigrana, while in Amsterdam for an interesting and productive project meeting.

The bike use and infrastructure of the Netherlands always impresses me. With all of the direct and indirect health benefits of biking, I can't help but wonder, what would it take to move the needle towards this culture and urban design in the US?

@EPA's replacement of old school buses with newer, cleaner buses reduced absenteeism. Removing the oldest buses from the fleet could put 1.3M more kids in school. Read more about this natural experiment led by @MeredithPedde @umichsph in @naturesustainab. http://shorturl.at/txD37

Clearly my kid was thoroughly captivated by his math class today... I do love the person on the ladder trying to save the balloon.

It's been a life long dream of mine to see the Aurora Borealis. This weekend the skies of northern Michigan delivered. Truly spectacular!

Nerd happiness is when life randomly takes you past the same parking lot in rural Wyoming where you collected a noise sample 3 years ago and you have your instrument on you for a replicate sample!

Last night, at a middle school music showcase, a student said something like "I'm going to attempt to play <something really hard>. I'm probably going to make mistakes but it's going to be AWESOME!!!!!" And it was. I'm thinking of putting her sentiment onto a poster for my wall.
