North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, held local elections today. Support for AfD up but at 15% well below party's national polling. And lower among the young: 5th place on 11% among under-25s, who also delivered a smaller swing towards the party than did older generations.

No, it is not wrong, they really try to make it as comparable as possible. Obviously, there are a lot of deviations and approximations. Comparisons across systems are really difficult. I find it pretty interesting.

Der Index kontrolliert nicht für die Größe der Institutionen, d.h. absolute Größe ist hier die Kernaussage.

Imputed social benefits are added to gross salary. The imputation uses the standard contribution rates from the OECD Taxing Wages model (for a single worker, age 40, no children), applied to the gross salary.

164000 für eine Professur wirkt schon arg hoch, vor allem, wenn das ein Mittelwert sein soll. Leider verteilt sich die Methodik über mehrere PDFs. Aber vielleicht hat ja sich ja schon jemand durchgewühlt?

The index shows promising lead (forecasting) relations with monthly regional unemployment rates and annual GDP. More importantly, it opens up new ways to trace economic transitions, local narratives, and policy-relevant developments.

“For many, it’s a symbol of benign indulgence, but the truth is sobering: alcohol is a leading cause of preventable death, linked to everything from strokes to car crashes. The recently announced surgeon general’s call for warning labels on alcoholic beverages underscores this reality”
The surgeon general is right: America has a drinking problem
The alcohol industry relies on the myth of “responsible enjoyment” to downplay its products’ risks while spreading misinformation to stifle regulation.

Very sad to hear that Dick Nelson has passed away (at 94).

Dick was a huge influence on me & a great friend of SPRU.

In his 80s he would fly over on the red-eye (economy) & come straight in to talk to PhD students.

He was an absolute intellectual giant & one of the kindest people I've ever met.

Technically, I got one, but I rarely use it. I am an "office person" ;-)

What an honor to be listed among the top 100 Economic Geographers by #reprec in terms of an aggregate of citations and publication metrics. While the list should not be over-interpreted (lots of missing persons), it is nevertheless something I will celebrate. ideas.repec.org/top/top.geo.... 💡

Getting ready for the #RSA2025 in #Porto. I was looking for a smoothie, but eventually had to settle for a more traditional dish. @rsa-rsrs.bsky.social

Thanks. I guess you recognize it so well because you frequently re-read the paper, right?

This publication was long in the making (we started in 2017!). Thanks to my amazing co-author Torben and to Lars Mewes, who helped developing the initial idea.
