I've been thinking the term "wasting time". It has never made much sense to me. All those moments of procrastination that seem to be putting off writing a paper that wants to be written are not wasting time. They are moments of mental preparation. For moments of efficiency that will come later.

A research project that involves counting sheep? A European consortium could be formed around this with the acronym INSOMNIA.

Really enjoyed the #icep2025 conference in Vilnius this week. Astoundingly well organised conference, and a brilliant week of brain boosting discussions. Fabulous!

I am very happy to say that Mags Currie is taking on the Head of Department role for SEGS. I have enjoyed the experience (apart from covid - a rubbish time to be a manager!), but I am ready to do more academic stuff again. Congratulations Mags - the department is very lucky - you will be superfab!

I think this statement is a good generalisable hypothesis that could be used to compare all local authorities. Everyone loves a metric these days. Maybe you need to convert this into a nice KPI. Call it the 'Walker metric'. With a footnote about other transport forms that do not follow your surname!

I've been hearing quite a lot recently about how AI tools can help with repetitive boring tasks. I am not convinced that this is the best use of computational power. Why can we not simply ask ourselves if some of the repetetive tasks we do currently are perhaps pointless, and stop doing them?

Thanks for a really interesting webinar. One thing that I thought might be worth noting as an additional use case for LLMs is their increasing usefulness in helping with coding tasks related to data analysis. I have found Claude and Gemini to be really useful in helping to plug my R knowledge gaps.

What a brilliant idea! I have long felt that the culture of rejection in academia is not spoken about enough. As someone with a cupboard full of paper and grant rejections, I think this idea is totally ace!

Great initiative Wouter. Would love to be added.
