Talking just yesterday about how young people are MUCH more visible again at home. I wonder if now screens are so integral to the enforced aspects of young life, and accommodation is small and often miserable again, there's much more appetite to just get out than in recent years.

Many good conversations over the years with academics who've talked about the aesthetic of the lecture theatre still being of great appeal to students, and much as I love hybrid/hyflex courses, I think this is true: just look at popular student YouTubers. IRL learning isn't over.

Students of course are under huge pressure financially at present, at least in the fee-paying parts of UK HE. But I'm sceptical about the narrative of the near-empty lecture hall, which sounds more 2023 than 2025 to me. 2/2

Phew, it's lucky they were only trying to intimidate queer people and not protest about the collapse of the environment, otherwise they'd have been arrested for stopping traffic

Utterly disgusting, but another sign of the continuing emboldening of hate groups.

Labour should be as quick to act against groups like this, who are actually causing harm and breaking the law, as they declare themselves to be against those opposing genocide.

Evangelical 'King's Army' group disrupts traffic in historic LGBTQ+ London district
A right-wing, evangelical group calling itself the King's Army blocked traffic on Old Compton Street in Soho while chanting anti-LGBTQ+ slogans.

it costs £4m, is on the banks of the Thames by Hampton Wick and currently these places are being bought up by tasteless fuckwits who wreck their insides and spend most of their time in their country pile bitching about London

What the fuck happened to this future and which absolute shitbag stole it from us?

!!!!! Thank you to whoever wrote in to Newswatch pointing out that needle footage jumpscares are a horrible, unnecessary thing in newsreels. It's incredible how often these turn up, and they reliably give me the most awful physical reactions because it's a real trauma.

Exactly! And if there are issues that the place is aware of and working/coping with then, does it really help to pass on your frustrations, disinterest and anxieties to your students? Much better to just ensure that they are aware of what should happen, and where you get help if it doesn't.

Bonus point: we are usually specialists in making things work for you and your pedagogy, which means that we do know a few things about teaching, learning, and assessment - we are necessarily education professionals as much as we are technology professionals.

2/2 That your attitude to institutional platforms and practices matters: if you portray a VLE as a mysterious portal of doom, students are likely to treat it as a crisis when they need to access and submit work within it. We're all doing our best and it's easier as a team.

1/2 A failure to appreciate all the digital skills you, as practicing academics, do already have, which are, in fact, "techy", are not easy or inherent, need modelling, and are skills your students most likely need to learn, and can learn, from you!

Ok, did not expect “The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe” to feel quite so relevant to this moment.

Here’s Edmund, deciding to side with the leader who he’s been told disappears people.
He did want Turkish Delight and to be a prince (and later a king) and to pay Peter out for calling him a beast. As for what the Witch would do with the others, he didn't want her to be particularly nice to them - certainly not to put them on the same level as himself; but he managed to believe, or to pretend he believed, that she wouldn't do anything very bad to them, 'Because,' he said to himself, 'all these people who say nasty things about her are her enemies and probably half of it isn't true. She was jolly nice to me, anyway, much nicer than they are. I expect she is the rightful Queen really. Anyway, she'll be better than that awful Aslan!' At least, that was the excuse he made in his own mind for what he was doing. It wasn't a very good excuse, however, for deep down inside him he really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel.

The Portland frogs are multiplying. I’m watching the livestream at katu.com/watch
Three green froggies and a skeleton frog! These are inflatable costumes and some of the frogs have little capes. They’re protesting on the other side of the street from ICE.

(I think the title really made for radically different expectations, something much more like Miley Cyrus' latest - also interesting to compare the two of them when thinking about the extent to which growing up in public makes/breaks artistry)

I find her fascinating, I think I've always found her work...varied in terms of what I enjoy, but the way everything turns its spotlight on everything she does is particularly fascinating: frankly I don't think anything holds up if you look at it through every lens at once XD

...but I think like a lot of Nashville-esque artists it isn't always specific influence, so much as a culture of writing music as a way of life, expressing yourself in songs. Her early country style feels a lot more normal in that sense, stylistically, it's just less common in pop music.
abbis.bsky.social
She's definitely talked a lot about songwriting and writing music, and she absolutely cowrites a lot of her music, particularly melodies - there's usually a lot of footage of her coming up with it that comes with her new music. She's a very collaborative artist with her producers...

This makes no sense, surely there's no way this is faster than recording a quick clip of yourself.

If I had time, energy and an overly high value of my own pastiche, I'd really enjoy reviewing, say, the new Ash album in the style of every major news outlet's Taylor Swift reviews.
