The forced divestiture has always been "how dare you, only WE are allowed to spy on users like this" Sinophobia, but that doesn't make TikTok any less spyware. If you've been okay using the spyware app for this long, well, now you know more about why so many of us call it spyware.

I can also do nice content, look at these lovely things
If, like us, you have long-loved the book covers and illustration in the films of Wes Anderson, might I so highly recommend the exhibition at London's Design Museum: Crow and I had a wonderful time seeing these and many more up close! (Not to mention all the glorious costumes...) 💙📚

apparently Gen Z take whole nights to do their admin and do massive self-care routines with it and this is probably all very sensible but why is everything SO hard and SO complicated and SO boring
January 24, 2026 at 1:18 PM
so much for not thinking about technology, got run in circles trying to sort some details out with the AA and ended up with a bloke at the helpdesk explaining that no it just doesn't work in this specific situation, then ranting at me about how appalling their systems were

This this this:

Look, I’m sorry but if you’re not finding kind, cool, creative and fascinating people to follow and interact with on this site, that’s a skill issue / you problem.
Any complaint about Bluesky that isn't specifically about moderation decisions or site architecture is just you saying "my friends are boring as shit". Get better friends.

Anyway, it is the WEEKEND and I'm going to try not to think about technology at all
January 23, 2026 at 9:10 PM
I think this is one of the reasons I'm so tech-angry and tech-tired and so desperately want to facilitate positive use of computers: my dad was part of the dawn of the computer and I have inherited so very much of his fury of the choices made ever since.

Colin Coggles, apparently there's only one of you in the UK, and my dad has fond memories of working with you on the night shift on Threadneedle Street in 1962, and I hear about you every time the reminiscences come out XD
January 23, 2026 at 5:44 PM
Once apparently NatWest Bank Threadneedle St got given a Ferranti Pegasus computer and they didn't want it, so they just left it outside Fenchurch St Station in the rain until it was unusable and I respect this approach to tech refusal
January 23, 2026 at 5:36 PM
My dad's had three glasses of wine and he's reminiscing about the IBM 1410 again
January 23, 2026 at 5:34 PM
Amongst everything, a story of a space still filled with care and respect is a beautiful thing.
A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.

A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.

The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

As the BBC - abandoning even the vaguest pretence at balance for a campaign grounded in passionate intensity - it's worth reading this joint statement signed by 40 children’s charities, digital safety experts and bereaved families.

They oppose one.

See also: running a business online, using any platform as the hub of your work, these very places we socialise... even if you didn't learn it with LJ, or Etsy, have you not seen the state of Google, or, come on, Twitter?! Digital hygiene is not optional, especially if your job is document-based.
The thing about the bloke who lost stuff bc ChatGPT shows the extent to which people still haven't understood that TECHNOLOGY IS NOT BUILT FOR YOU ANY MORE. It is purely, entirely self-serving, with zero obligation to, or care for, its users. Everything is on you; you cannot rely on software.

I think our talk on Rebuilding Trust and Quality in Assessment and Feedback in HE went surprisingly well at BETT today, despite a moment at the start where I thought I might just black out at the memories of tanking my MA presentation.

10% more impressed with this tech conference because as well as an app I obviously didn't download it also has proper paper maps of the exhibition

They had the audacity to claim Bluesky didn't have the juice, but not since peak Twitter have I logged off for an evening and come back to my entire feed speaking in a new language of rapid-fire in-jokes that I have to reverse-engineer to figure out what's happening. That, my friends, is The Juice.
Two big guys walked up front and started yelling at the pilot and the pilot screamed that they weren't going to Davos, they were going to Vienna, Virginia and that he had to get home to his family.
wow just woke up from a nap, i guess everyone else on Air Force One realized we aren't going to the right place

The amount of LinkedIn messages I've had because I'm doing a BETT talk is hilarious, sure, I'm desperate to meet the sender of:

"Appreciate the connection. Your work around [topic/session theme] really aligns with some of the conversations we’re hoping to have at BETT London."
