I definitely get that some deaths are traumatically dark and involve impossible-to-forget circumstances; we've got one of those in our family. And, of course, everyone needs to mourn and honor in a way that comforts. For me, birthdays and happy memories are the comfort and honoring.

I don't understand the point of remembering the date of a loved one's death. I don't want people remembering that! Remember, celebrate my birthday every year! That's what I do with my parents. I was just talking about my dad and realized his yahrzeit was a few weeks ago. I'm so happy I forgot! 🕯

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.
