This is why I get so exasperated when people suggest SF written 50+ years ago as the place for new readers of the genre, especially young readers, to start with. There is SO MUCH that will throw them out of the work, from outdated tech to outdated social structures. They'll leave and not come back.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

Try to turn off artificial lights after 6pm, and if they're iPad babies, swap the iPad for something like the Onyx Boox so that the backlight can be turned off after 6pm. Put blinds too and set them down after 6pm to get the street lights out. Kids don't understand sociological time, only sun time.

I had a dream once where I lived in the distant future, and I went to my local mathematics library and there were halls and halls of books that were just math, but not in the academic way, there were fantasy books, and political diatribes, childrens books, and health books. All written in math.

Math is a strong enough language that you can do all the things you can do in any other language, like write novels and poetry, people mostly don't because they're cowards, but sometimes they do and they're relegated, sadly, to the back of a dusty academic journal.
