(He/Any) General engineer. No, more general than that. Beholding the carelessness, angry we aren't caring for each other more.

You’re possibly the very last person on the internet I would expect to make an argument of this form.

My gods if this thread isn’t basically a museum exhibit on whiteness…

To make a browser usable if you have executive function challenges the new tab page needs to be blank, but achieving this in @microsoft.com edge requires editing the windows registry, lol.

the cishet ideal is about looking a really particular way, and not giving off any weird vibes, and having kids who also don’t give off any weird vibes, and you can’t talk to your partner because they’re the other gender species

millenials briefly tried just chilling out about this, but it got worse

How do we reckon with that our history of trying this is, to my knowledge, uniformly godawful and catastrophically counterproductive for all humanity?

New Hampshire, LOL

[it is alone in new England in having any red dots for 287(g) agreements created under trump 2, and it is solid red with them. The state motto is “live free or die”.]

Which is, of course, why ICE is trying to deputize local police to do their work for them: the notorious 287(g) agreements.

But if you have a good sense of what US pop density looks like, you'll see that outside of FL, LOTS of ppl live in green (terminated) or blank (never had a deal) areas.
Map of 287g agreements. Red and orange are hard to tell apart, and not a fan of circle size to distinguish things here, but it gets the point across. Source: https://www.ilrc.org/practitioners/national-map-287g-agreements

Basically my entire politics. I am interested in your liberalism if it's liberalism that takes liberalism seriously but I can't consider it to be such a thing if there is some racial exemptions made simply for the benefit of your preferred group in MENA. This is what liberalism in the US does.

I do not oppose liberalism as a camp per se I oppose their exceptionalization vis a vis Israel

#berkeley folks - the TPUSA post-Kirk tour is spending the next month at universities in the south and then naturally concluding here on Nov 10th. We can safely assume protests of that event are planned to be the pretext for this kind of show of force here.

New, from me:
Trump's 3 step plan to create a military omniforce
1. Purge - those deemed disloyal
2. Merge - different parts of law enforcement/military
3. Surge - impose the omniforce on Dem cities; instigate unrest; assert dominance; silence dissent

Purge, Merge, and Surge
Trump is creating a omniforce of armed loyalists to establish his police state

I have to wonder if people who say this combination of things are being genuine, even with themselves - because if it was never used to stop housing construction this wouldn’t matter, right? The opposition to new buildings seems sub-rational for a lot of people.

Important to remember that not only did we pass #SB79, the biggest transit-oriented upzoning bill ever, we also passed a clean CEQA exemption for new multifamily infill housing.

This is, bar none, the biggest year in state action on housing policy reform in California history. Not even close.

Word to the wise: do not fly internationally into Logan. All of the major public detainments of Legal Residents and Citizens at airports have been out of Logan.

Anyone in Boston an immigration lawyer or know one who can help this woman? Her husband is detained at Logan over a dismissed misdemeanor from 2017. He’s a legal resident of the US. She just asked for help an hour ago.

Democrats are going to need to get good at saying clearly that people in minority groups can invoke their identity to make a political point either in bad faith or in ways that are just plain wrong, and they are going to need to get good at saying this *even when they are not in that group*

Yeah I mean it’s routine for legislators to be rewarded after they leave office by patrons they served with their vote. We could absolutely expect the same of Justices.

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

relaxed saturday evening reading through "women designers of book plates (1902)" and flipped past a couple of beautiful professional designs only to see this perfect plate by a young Miss Page
an open book with a hand-drawn bookplate on the right side. the top of the plate has "A. Helen Page" written in tentative cursive. below that is a child's drawing of a girl with wavy hair and a triangle skirt. at the bottom, in tentative print "HER BOOK 1899"

Many historians of Rome identify Roman generals becoming the personal sources of payment for their armies as a key step in the downfall of the Republic, since it personalized military authority and freed armies to fight for their immediate leader, who paid them, instead of for the Republic

One possible mechanism for the absences and exits charts trending toward the previous baseline is variation in individual likelihood of being killed or disabled by covid, and most of the most-vulnerable having already become casualties.
adjectivalnoun.bsky.social
Jumped out at me in the abstract:
“Labor force exits after a health-related absence also continued to be elevated, with 13.1% more exits in the postpandemic period compared with before the pandemic”
juliaraifman.bsky.social
“Workers continued to see elevated health-related absences linked to COVID-19…

[which] has likely raised the value to workers of paid-leave policies & existing social safety net programs.

Measures to reduce COVID-19 transmission in the workplace may also mitigate these new exposure risks”
Enduring Outcomes of COVID-19 Work Absences on the US Labor Market
This cohort study examines the extent to which COVID-19 continues to generate work absences and decrease labor force participation beyond the pandemic period in the US.

There’s a good argument for the nihilistic characteristics of the present authoritarian push deriving from entrenched power of fossil industries needing the reality of what’s happening to the atmosphere to be disregarded.

I have maintained for a while that the reason everything around the world (funded by petro-states and carbon oligarchs) is happening rn is because the most powerful industry to ever exist on the face of the Earth has no future. And so it must wipe the future out of our imaginations.

For 20 years now, I have been saying, "the right is building a giant, explicitly ideological infotainment behemoth, sucking up viewers, sucking up local papers & stations, sucking up radio, sucking up social media, dominating the info environment. Dems aren't. It's gonna be a problem!"
