its like the weird russian ultranationalist obsessed with spy kids 2

…..what the hell?

later on, i became aware of the target’s sins and said “well, the other professionals who are attacking them still are insane, but this person is not worth going to bat for”
aelkus.bsky.social
so on the outside it looked even more egregious. “damn, these people have no professional standards! they got caught making obvious lies about this person or just lost their minds”
aelkus.bsky.social
the thing was that the crazy people were not randos. they were other journalists or pundits
aelkus.bsky.social
most people don’t have energy to do in depth investigations of online disputes. they just see someone that looks superficially reasonable being attacked by someone else that’s having a mental health break

and the “toxoplasma of rage” reactions help them because it shifts attention to the craziness of the reactors rather than the behavior of the reacted-to.

They want the angry reaction, the hate-clicks. No such thing as bad publicity. The easiest kind of attention to get is negative attention.
aelkus.bsky.social
all they had to do was keep a performance of politeness and point out how crazy their opponents were.
aelkus.bsky.social
i will admit that in the past there were people i now consider to be charlatans that i gave some benefit of the doubt to because they were constantly being attacked by people that were frothing at the mouth insane

i think for there to be progress people have to fear being canceled by their own side

so this kind of person may lose their shit after being slapped around in public, and some do crash out. but many just keep on trucking 24 hours later. because their support is about the emotional service they provide to followers

odds are someone has embarrassed them in a way equivalent to a derek guy beatdown, but you are either unaware of this or do not care
aelkus.bsky.social
and you may at times acknowledge that the pundit isn't exactly on the level but excuse it because the people they rage against are worse to you
aelkus.bsky.social
the reasons why aren't really that mysterious. you yourself may even have a favorite pundit you like because he or she hates the "right people" and articulates your resentment of them in a way that is therapeutic for you
aelkus.bsky.social
put differently, they’ve already been shown up repeatedly by others. they’ll persist as public figures despite being shown up by someone else. its because they have a base of support — both institutional and popular — that doesn’t care
aelkus.bsky.social
i think a lot of them already are immune to public humiliation

Seeing dudes try to step to the menswear guy makes me understand better the mentality of the regular Street Punks who keep hassling Kiryu in Act 3 of every Yakuza game when hes got all the abilities unlocked

there are always exceptions but this is more right than wrong

It seems like when people are incredibly bad situations they mostly try to survive.

following politics and engaging in political behavior is, all things being equal, the province of the privileged
aelkus.bsky.social
this is the rule for political behavior in general. you’ve likely heard the slogan “only the privileged are apolitical” but its flat out wrong
aelkus.bsky.social
one reason for prevalence of middle class and above terrorists is simply that truly desperate people lack the means to engage in terrorism in the first place
annenotation.bsky.social
It's taken for granted that when people are in bad enough circumstances, they become terrorists because they have nothing else to live for, but actually that doesn't seem to be the pattern at all.

This is actually a good example for thinking about what is actually going on linguistically. Why is an Italian using french pronunciation? I think the answer is he's not! Turando is the most naturally italian pronunciation of Turandot, see for example Nabucco instead of Nebuchadnezzar

Newsweek's Joe Klein in 1996: "There are an awful lot of journalists who find what Buchanan says to be utterly abhorrent, but they've been giggling along with him. Part of every one of us is a theatre critic, and he is appealing to that part."

Sadly, my contract with Blizzard ended in September. That means I'm looking for fulltime or contract work as a senior writer or narrative designer. If you need someone who can write sharp characters, poetic prose, and emotional stories, I'm available! www.hazelmonforton.com

It's #portfolioday! I'm presently a senior narrative designer at Blizzard, but before that I was at Bungie and Arkane. I wrote for the Writer's Guild award-nominated Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and a bunch of critically acclaimed seasons and expansions in Destiny 2.
