Good morning, new followers from the polling and data starter pack!

I don’t work in the industry anymore but spent 10 years as a pollster/campaign consultant for Democratic candidates and causes. These days I’m in law school, hoping to practice labor law, but still post about polling regularly-ish.

While I don’t think it makes a huge difference (and neither is really quantifiable), I slightly preferred asking respondents how motivated they were to vote over how enthusiastic they were. I think “motivated/not motivated” comes closer to capturing how most people feel about voting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My ideal scenario would be Markey stepping aside and endorsing Ayanna Pressley or someone similarly progressive. (Michelle Wu would also be great, but it'd be weird to jump to Senate right after running for re-election.) But Markey over Moulton really isn't a hard choice, even with his age.

I'm gonna try to articulate something I've been thinking about for a while, regarding *why* disillusionment, distrust, & dissatisfaction with democracy are rising.

Almost everything I read takes this phenomenon as an exogenous shock, assuming no one chose to make it so. I suspect that's incomplete.

I'm trying to decide on my sign. I made one in June that reads "When we said abolish ICE, we didn't mean the glaciers!" I'm quite fond of it and it would easily survive another protest (it was drizzling last time so I wrapped it in clear tape), but making a new sign would also be nice.

I have no idea what to make of the Blackwater stuff, but if this guy is such a shoe-in to win the general election, surely he should be able to beat Janet Mills in the primary, right? Winning against an older woman who's been elected statewide and has far better name recognition is necessary!

"it is necessary to have a sane conservative party for a democracy to survive" should not be an controversial opinion
golikehellmachine.com
you can just read the interview, you know.
So I see this election as very critical to who we are as a nation - the character of America, democracy. And they may not like hearing that, but I don't like what they're saying either. And what they're - the assault that they are making on - no one is above the law. That's been what America has been about, except if you're Donald Trump.

KELLY: When you say they, you're talking about who? Republicans?

PELOSI: Yeah. I'm talking...

KELLY: People who support Trump?

PELOSI: ...About the cult that the Republican Party has become - a cult to a thug. And that thug would be Donald Trump. So I wish they'd take back their part of - the country needs a strong Republican Party. It has had a strong Republican Party with great leaders for America. And that is really not what we're seeing there. It's up to them, though.

I have long believed that we should be WAY more vocal about how police and ICE constantly murder dogs, and I think this is great messaging actually.

The reality is that you can mobilize a whole lot of usually tuned-out Americans around a “someone is being mean to hecking doggos” cause.

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.

You can't logic your way out of being burnt out. Unless you're me. Who should be able to do it and it's a personal failing that I can't

Weirdly, the only place I’ve seen it even somewhat recently was in Mexico in 2021. Though that was a Cancun resort, so I assume they were trying to impress us gringos.

Indeed. And your post reminds me I need to go through my pasta/canned food cabinet and put together a bag for the International Law Journal’s food drive!

One of my go-to sources is Dollar Tree Dinners (on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok). She's very conscious of the fact that people struggling to afford food likely also have limited time and kitchen equipment, and her recipes factor that in. I've tried 3 recipes of hers and all have come out well.

There are many online resources for eating on a low grocery budget. Here’s a good one, using the Roast Chicken Plan. Rotisserie chickens are still pretty cheap or you can get a whole roaster for 1.99/lb (as of Saturday at HyVee) www.allrecipes.com/50-dollar-gr...

Signal boosting for my fellow GLP-1 folks in particular, since a lot of discussion in our community on diet involves how to get enough protein and a lot of us (me included) use protein supplements.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

FYI, the 100k figure for the Washington Post is print circulation, not total. Still a huge drop and a deserved one.

Already today, Israel has:

-Conducted a drone strike on Khan Younis in Gaza

-Shot & wounded two others near Khan Younis

-Killed 5 Palestinians in Gaza City

-Fired on & wounded a several others near Jabalia

All in violation of the “ceasefire.”

Both a physical & psychological public health crisis, all those guys who were never exactly emotionally stable to begin with all ‘roided up & sitting in their trucks pink-faced & throbbing-veined screaming at the world.

I've been around some fitness chat groups and I'm convinced that steroid use is a public health crisis that nobody's talking about.

They are terrified of the No Kings rallies and doing everything they can to discredit them.

If you're on the fence about going, just think of how much it'll piss off these assholes.

Emmer: "We call it the 'Hate America' rally because you'll see the hate for America all over this thing when they show up. The rumor is that they can't end this shutdown because this small but very violent and vocal group is the only one that's happy about this."

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying reading my timeline's literary opinions and urge you to share more of them, but I regret to inform you all that most of your literary opinions are actually quite hinged.

My middle name is spelled differently on my Social Security card than it is on my birth certificate and driver's license. I'm waiting for this to cause some sort of huge problem.

Hope you're able to get it sorted out!

A story I tell to explain why I’m closer to my dad:

The first campaign I worked was in RI. A couple weeks in, my dad asked about the race and told me he started reading the Providence Journal online.

My mom called at 8 AM the day after the primary, upset I hadn’t returned her primary night call.

Yeah, I think the problem is more opportunity cost. CBS will lose viewers uninterested in what they’re selling instead of swaying the masses, but it’s one fewer outlet trying to do actual good journalism at a time we already have too few.

Fortunately, unlike the faulty splash guard and brake pads from 1L October or the emergency vet visit from 2L August, this particular incident is less than $200 (just replacing 1 tire), so I may be able to hold off on the fund. Let’s hope this is my biggest unexpected expense for awhile.
amandahoey.bsky.social
I was thinking this morning on my way in that unlike the last two years, I haven’t had any major expenses this academic year that would require asking the Law Students First fund for some help.

Guess who has two thumbs, a lot of regrets, and a screw in her tire that can’t be repaired?

A miracle they’re still alive. Elated for their families. Can’t help but think of all the hostages who would have also come home two years ago had Netanyahu chosen his own people over his thirst for war.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.
