Good morning, new followers from the polling and data starter pack!

I don’t work in the industry anymore but spent 10 years as a pollster/campaign consultant for Democratic candidates and causes. These days I’m in law school, hoping to practice labor law, but still post about polling regularly-ish.

Let's not confuse the people giving the stupid orders with the people who have to deal with following them, who are often good and decent people.

The sibling-in-law brined the turkey in rum and apple cider, and now they’re getting the smoker ready for cooking. Meanwhile, I just prepped the sweet potato casserole with pecan and brown sugar topping. Today is going to be a good day.

Happy Thanksgiving, Bluesky!

As you’re preparing for your Thanksgiving meal, remember the skilled work it took to get that food to your grocery store.

Tell us your favorite Thanksgiving dish, and we can share some of what we know about the work behind the ingredients.

Could be the result of:

- A politically motivated attack
- A robbery
- A negligent discharge
- An argument between Guard members

The point is: Don't assume anything and wait for details
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two National Guard members have been shot in Washington, D.C., and their condition isn't known, AP source says.

My grandmother, not normally much of a drinker or smoker, was three sheets to the wind one Thanksgiving and decided she’d have one of Uncle Ernie’s cigarettes. She forgot you have to ash it and the ash ended up dangling down to her chest.

This was the 90s; my mother’s never let her forget it.
yes, hello, I would like to place an order for everyone’s funniest stories of holiday food-related family grudges / drama / chaotic incidents / lore

I feel like we need this

my take on Food Discourse is that it's always ridiculous but it's also nice to be fighting about dumb internet shit again instead of dealing with Oppressive Despair all the time so please keep posting your bad takes

Today I have disappointed my dog and betrayed her trust. It’s hard for me to confess this, but I brought home a pack of dental sticks and it took me a whole minute to put my stuff down, locate the dental sticks in the bag I brought in, open them, and give her a stick. I’m truly sorry for my failure.

It’s nice, having a real constitution over here: even with an insane despot trying and mostly failing to wreck it, it protects our rights way better than the British ‘constitution’ does for Brits.

I’ve mostly been offline last night and today, and found I have a bunch of new followers. Hi!

Come introduce yourselves, and I apologize in advance if you’re here for real-world politics and I spend my entire Thanksgiving visit to my sister’s getting her to play Suzerain and posting about it. 😂

good work guys you picked a fight in which Dems can stand up out of their permanent defensive crouch and go “our guy is a fucking astronaut and you’re an alcoholic tv host”
Gallego to Hegseth: "You will never ever be half the man that Sen. Kelly is. You, sir, are a coward. And the fact that you are following this order from the president shows how big of a coward you are. I can't wait until you are no longer the secretary of defense."

What do you all eat for Christmas, if you celebrate?

On my dad’s side of the family, one of my aunts has been making beef tenderloin and penne alla vodka for Christmas dinner since I was a baby. On my mom’s side, we most often have lasagna.
it fascinates me how most everyone in the U.S. does turkey for Thanksgiving, but we are all over the map as to what we eat for Christmas (as is proper for a hugely diverse nation).

I come from a Christmas prime rib roast family, myself.
I also use the bacon method. Although turkey is Christmas dinner where I come from.

So a while back I was commissioned to do short bios of various rock stars, and they were just about universally total psychopaths, with the huge exception of Freddie Mercury. A lovely man who did good by his wife, his lovers, and his cats.
Today (24 November) marks the passing of Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. He remains regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.

Nothing makes me feel old quite like writing a student evaluation that's glowing, with the sole exception of "please either use the projector or make your font bigger, I can't read your PowerPoints in class."

It’s rather telling that Democrats said “illegal orders” and Donald immediately thought “MY orders”

It’s no longer an issue, but after a godawful traffic nightmare of a drive from DC to CT in 2016, I gave up and told my family they’d see me at Christmas. Went to a couple of Thanksgivings with local relatives, hosted a few relatives twice, had one solo COVID Thanksgiving.
Actually in the spirit of this conversation, what’s a decision you made about a past Thanksgiving holiday that really paid off? I think people often feel trapped by their lives. Sharing our experiences can liberate us from that sense of claustrophobia.
On the most recent episode of VIBE CHECK, we answer listener questions about Thanksgiving, most importantly “do you go celebrate with the family members you don’t even like?”

I’m a big believer in Antonelli and I know the Mercedes is good in these conditions, but even so, Piastri being unable to overtake in a timely manner is not what you want to see if you’re rooting for the championship to go down to Abu Dhabi. (And I am just because otherwise that race will suck.)

Also, while I’m on the subject of Thanksgiving prep, a PSA: if you bought a frozen turkey, take it out of the freezer this weekend and move it to the fridge! You need 24 hours of thawing per 4-5 pounds of turkey, and brining on Wednesday (especially a dry brine) will be easier if it’s thawed.

Important info for anyone stocking up on butter for Thanksgiving (so, uh, hopefully anyone cooking): when I got groceries earlier today, Kerrygold butter was on sale at Stop and Shop in CT.

if you think setting X has obfuscatory language which is trying to trick you into behavior Y, and the company tells you "setting X does not control Y," then you can more or less take them at their word because if X did control Y, saying that it didn't would estop them from arguing consent.
Google, the company thst spontaneously changed Chrome, search and other behaviors so copy-pasting links directs then through the Spyware share.google service, wants you to know it is very hurt you would think that Gmail's smart features would invade your privacy and asks you to stop thinking that.

My God, Sarah Strong is having a great game. She got a little overlooked compared to Paige and Azzi last year, but she’s going to be a superstar player.
