Good morning, new followers from the polling and data starter pack!

I don’t work in the industry anymore but spent 10 years as a pollster/campaign consultant for Democratic candidates and causes. These days I’m in law school, hoping to practice labor law, but still post about polling regularly-ish.

Fortunately, unlike the faulty splash guard and brake pads from 1L October or the emergency vet visit from 2L August, this particular incident is less than $200 (just replacing 1 tire), so I may be able to hold off on the fund. Let’s hope this is my biggest unexpected expense for awhile.
amandahoey.bsky.social
I was thinking this morning on my way in that unlike the last two years, I haven’t had any major expenses this academic year that would require asking the Law Students First fund for some help.

Guess who has two thumbs, a lot of regrets, and a screw in her tire that can’t be repaired?

A miracle they’re still alive. Elated for their families. Can’t help but think of all the hostages who would have also come home two years ago had Netanyahu chosen his own people over his thirst for war.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

I saw a mix of ages at No Kings protests in April and June, including older folks as well as young families and middle-aged people, but the Tesla protest in my area I made it to was overwhelmingly older people. It was great.

All the best people are weirdos, probably including the people you spoke to. That sounds like a lovely gathering.

My great aunt was a Catholic nun (Sisters of Mercy) and heavily involved in the effort to advocate for repealing the death penalty in New Hampshire, even in her 80s. Made me very proud.

Public funding of elections, then instead of giving mostly-ceremonial ambassadorships to big donors, we give them to elderly Senators.

We need a Senator Emeritus role where they still get to go to events and feel important but that gives them a graceful retirement route

Folks.

Everyone in DC is needed in Tuesday.

HR should maintain lists of employees with titles and job descriptions for each title. There’s no business reason to make your employees take time away from their actual jobs to write something like this. It’s a clear sign that she doesn’t know what she’s doing or respect her workers’ time.

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

From experience being mostly gender-conforming but fat: there is a certain kind of dude who gets uncontrollably, viscerally angry at having to see a woman that he doesn't want to fuck. Because obviously that's what we're here for.

I did notice that the 5 mg shot hurt a bit more to inject than the 2.5, which I could barely feel if I injected it in one of my thighs. It’s still not bad at all, just a pinch, but I wonder if the higher dose uses a larger needle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Week 16 (and a day since I forgot to post yesterday) of Zepbound, I lost a pound this week, and I took the 5 mg dose for the first time last night. So far, so good. No nausea but I ate some sushi for a late lunch an hour ago and feel VERY full so it seems to have increased appetite suppression.

Week 15 on Zepbound. Good news on a couple fronts: I’ve now lost 31 pounds total (2 this week) and my doctor approved a dose increase from 2.5 mg to 5 mg. I’m going to take my last dose of 2.5 this week, then go up when I refill my prescription next week.
amandahoey.bsky.social
It’s been 14 weeks and I actually backtracked a bit this week. That one stubborn pound came back.

Some of it is subpar eating habits this week, alongside that time of the month, but I think it’s time to go up to 5 mg. My doc wants to see me in person first so I’m trying to get in soon.

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Has Been Canceled, BLM Says
It would have delivered a gargantuan 6.2 gigawatts of power.

The sort of telling thing about this, I think, is that this disparity would be pretty obvious to anyone—the candidate, his staffers, anyone—that even just rides the bus occasionally. The bus way over-indexes on elderly or disabled passengers because it requires less walking and stair-climbing.

You can tell Cuomo's campaign has cooked its brain on Twitter because it's repeating nonsense talking points from people like Andrew Fine and Reza who claim only rich people use transit.

As of 2017, bus riders in NYC earn an average salary of $28K, well under subway riders ($40K).

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

It’s made a huge difference for me, I feel so much more rested now. Falling asleep with it on is a little strange at first, but you get used to it quickly!

I believe it’s also too late to actually remove anyone from the ballot, and unlike Adams, Sliwa will get a fair number of votes without campaigning from lower-info Republicans who vote the party line.

I have mixed feelings at best about allowing the approach of increasing jury-imposed sentences generally, but just this once, it’s a nice little treat.

It's difficult at times to hold both "this admin is doing lasting and serious damage to our institutions and the globe" and "this admin is full of the most bafflingly incompetent idiots you've ever seen who fall over themselves like a Vaudeville act constantly."

The duality of man is incredible.

Also, what Blumenthal did was serve in the National Guard during Vietnam and then make some vague statements later on implying he served in Vietnam. Not great, but Trump tells worse lies at least hourly, and everyone in CT has known about this since 2010. No one normal cares.
amandahoey.bsky.social
I just got the Hartford Courant alert about Trump going after Blumenthal again.

Fun fact: Blumenthal's wife is from a super-rich family of NYC real estate developers. Rumor has it Trump's grudge against Blumenthal is due at least in part to professional rivalry with the Wein/Malkin family.
atrupar.com
Trump on George Santos: "We have a young congressman that's right now in jail for lying about where he went to college and other things. It was frankly not good. It was pretty bad. But it was nothing compared to Blumenthal."
