My wife and I, in our early 40s, going to dinner on one bike, because adding spice to life has become a priority.

She's reviewing the menu ahead of time. 🤳😉

I can't emphasize just how much I'm longing for a government that doesn't spend every single day picking fights with other countries. JFC, it's easier to get along than it is to argue about everything.

If you live in Chicago, you've definitely seen people zipping around on blue Divvy bikes, and we've worked with Chicago SAFE to give you a look behind the scenes at Chicago's huge bike share system.

And we'll be working on a full-length video all about Divvy, coming out next month!

Boy cycles on a UK suburban road. SUV coming towards is slightly blurred. Grey day Boy cycles along a Dutch suburban street on a sunny day. Red cycle track. Pavement to the right. Parked cars to the left then road beyond that. Sunny day

Sure a car can do this, but the goal of good urban design is to give people the freedom to choose a better tool for the trip.

That's not always a huge cargo bike, it can be walking, a simple bike with panniers, or even public transit. In the end, each choice helps evaporate car traffic in cities.

Yet another view of the Netherlands' busiest bike intersection, made possible, in part, by an extraordinary bus network & no cars.
#Utrecht

Nog een blik op het drukste fietsknooppunt van Nederland, mede mogelijk gemaakt door een buitengewoon busnetwerk en het ontbreken van auto's.

If you don’t frequently see families with kids traveling to destinations by bike, your bike network isn’t safe enough (&/or your zoning forces sprawl & car dependency).

I really enjoy living in a big city. The best part is the public transport service: frequent, reliable, and running late into the night so you can go out and about without having to rely on a car. #WienLiebe #LoveVienna

Explanations now posted as a thread.

3.

They lack utility. There's no room for street trees, benches, bus shelters, or snow storage without obstructing the walking path.

A simple landscaped buffer strip solves all of these problems and creates a dignified, safe public space.

2.

They are psychologically stressful. The constant proximity to fast-moving traffic, noise, and fumes makes walking unpleasant.

This discourages the most vulnerable, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, from using the space.

1.

They are fundamentally unsafe. A curb-backed sidewalk provides zero buffer between a person and a multi-ton vehicle.

A momentary distraction or slight swerve from a driver can be catastrophic. There is no margin for error.
