Being an American civil servant in 2029 will quite possibly suck shit, and I cannot wait to be one.
theophite.bsky.social
i will go to work for the government if this occurs simply because someone has to
surcomplicated.bsky.social
The simple answer is that we rebuild the federal bureaucracy from close to scratch, after purging every single person brought in under MAGA hiring rules.

Perfectly possible, happened before. Would still suck along the way, but we'd get back to having an effective govt.

one of the greatest sins of American financial speculation/culture of hype in technology is that it completely erases (and arguably stunts) how most technological and engineering progress occurs, ie at the margin.

There are punch throughs but these, too, require at least a decade to appreciate.
tiredgenerally.bsky.social
yeah, the technological innovations if the past twenty years in QoL household products are genuinely miraculous. it just happened gradually and there isnt any one specific invention that we can point to

As student currently on a Pell Grant, they haven’t killed it yet. That being said, they did kill Grad PLUS so I’m probably gonna have to get my masters overseas.

Consumer electronics are remarkably better. Everything from household lighting, kitchen electronics (affordable grinders, espresso machines), keyboards, e-ink tablets, usb cords, desktop mics and cameras, etc. All of this shit was worse and much more expensive 20 years ago.
helldude.bsky.social
what exactly has gotten better for the average person in the past 20 years with all the innovation such as AI, exactly? what's the social use case here
amunicipalfox.bsky.social
So much of modern conservatism is either deliberately misreading children’s media, or just this meme.

it's very funny to me that his delusional misreadings can include both Watchmen, one of the great 20th century novels, and One Piece, a fun comic serial for children. But it's not good that this man is genuinely mad and a major political and financial force in the United States of America.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

I know there’s talk about what Woke 2 will look like culturally, and I think this sorta sentiment is closest to the form it’ll take among younger generations.
amunicipalfox.bsky.social
Also to your point ICE is absolutely gonna be the stock bad guy in the video games of the 2060s.
amunicipalfox.bsky.social
Yeah, I think in the long run the American strain of troop worship is dead considering that this is all Gen Alpha is gonna know in terms of civ-mil relations.

I do think ICE agents are gonna be the American stasi in popular culture and I don't think ERO guys realize their kids are probably gonna hate them
aelkus.bsky.social
the agency itselt should be bureaucratically re-arranged in a way that allows us to effectively abolish it in its current form without explicitly doing it in a way that makes us politically vulnerable. call it the “homeland protection enhancement” bill or something
opinionhaver.bsky.social
Yeah I think people here have unrealistic expectations for like jailing all ICE agents and that’s just almost certainly not going to happen even in extremely cool zone scenarios. But they should 100% have to lie for the rest of their lives about their employment history in conversation with everyone

this explains a lot of the public dooming about Democrats imo, especially ones who are liberal darlings
merovingians.bsky.social
we're all very powerless right now and for some people having their cynicism proved right gives them the illusion of control

Japan was still very busy replicating the Holocaust with the Chinese, and we absolutely would’ve vaporized Berlin if we’d gotten the bomb six months earlier!

my dream is retroactive use of the insurrection clause to sedes vacante the presidency but I fear the state the US is in where that becomes an option is one we don't want to experience if we have any choice

I mean I know that they leaned into a Roman aesthetic, but didn’t this literally happen in Rome? There were many Senators who were just find losing their power to the emperor because they still had the title and wealth that came with the position.

Cheap energy, cheap housing and cheap public transport is the magic trifecta.
economymedicine.bsky.social
Spain invested heavily in energy production especially solar given their climate. Making energy consistently cheap has fueled growth.

You would have to try hard to find a worse leader for the Soviet Union during WWII. IDK how Trotsky would’ve done, but I doubt he purges the Red Army so badly it is pushed to the brink of collapse!
