Just saw Geeta Gandhbhir‘s The Perfect Neighbor at #NYFF and am completely gutted. This is such an important film, especially in its ability to use police surveillance footage to show the beauty of Ajike’s community (and the abject failure to protect them). Will be processing this for a long time.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

Some context that I think gets lost by calling people here "protesters." Strictly true that they were protesting. But this was neighborhood. Almost all of it was people who came out of their houses and pleaded to stop using gas because there were kids in houses/yards in the blocks off Kedzie.

Some problems have simple solutions. This new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” is one. The answer is simply saying no.

Simple does not mean easy. But Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, Vanderbilt, Univ of AZ, UPenn, USC, UT Austin & UVA must understand what they’ll lose if they sign on.

Also, if you are serious about doing mutual aid around immigration, hunger, community defense, etc., you would be INSANE to ignore the massive network of local mosques, churches, synagogues already doing this work, and mobilizing folks who might otherwise be turned off by "political" causes.
