I had this photo pinned to the top of my Twitter feed for four years because whenever I look at it I remember happier times. Those memories grow more precious to me with every passing day.

I spent the last 20 years watching scrub reclaim a barren farm field near my home; in recent years it was bustling with wildlife. It broke my heart when the landowner decided on a whim that it looked messy and mowed it all down to the roots. Scrub, brush, & thickets are criminally underappreciated.

Far too often, scrub/brush is treated as a nuisance, hazard, or eyesore, when in fact it is vital habitat and a key component of natural succession.

For years, this was part of a path through the land, but it's now an impenetrable tangle of gorse and young trees.

As the trees grow, the gorse and other vegetation will be shaded out, and I'll be able to pass again, but through *rainforest*.

Scrub is how natural forest ecosystems form.

Thanks! Yes, the rock is all sourced locally.

Terrorism. There’s no other word to describe what we’re witnessing.

The Central Yukon Resource Management Plan has been rescinded.

“The Senate just plunged northern Alaska into chaos, ripping up a balanced land management plan that Alaskans spent years collaborating on,” said Cooper Freeman, our AK director. 🧵

Didn't expect the sun to come out this afternoon - only got a few drops of rain! October, like September, is turning out to be alarmingly warm and dry. #wawx

Finished another dry stone planter, now planted with a Forsythia!

Morning clouds after a spattering of rain. I was hoping for more precipitation! #wawx

This is why the state needs to take steps to prevent tax dollars from reaching the federal government.

We should also start investing in jumpstarting industrial hemp cultivation, processing, and manufacturing. This will provide more jobs and more environmental benefit than those defunded projects.

Cool, nice looking little tree!

As a hobby, I'm finding that bonsai requires immense patience, but is also incredibly peaceful and rewarding.

Before/after of today's bonsai project. I left a lot of growth I eventually intend on trimming in order to taper the trunk on this one.

I'm really enjoying working with these garden center fall bargain shrubs. Great subjects for teaching myself the art of bonsai!

First the clouds swept in from the East in a huge wave, then they poured jn from the West. Certainly some unusual weather today, but no rain! Things are getting dry again, and we need some precipitation. #wawx

"Vote Blue No Matter Who" did Democrats more harm than good. It's not an inspiring slogan, & it makes it impossible to hold politicians accountable.

Democrats must focus on offering compelling goals to voters, & on following through with those promises.

Boldness & integrity is a winning formula.

An autumn hiking and camping adventure video filmed in the spectacular hills of Radar Ridge & the imperiled forests of Lane Creek.

@daveupthegrovecpl.bsky.social Naselle should not be subjected to further clearcut logging. This landscape must be preserved as a Natural Resource Conservation Area.

Got my dry-stone planter disassembled, rebuild, filled with soil, and planted with a Spreading Japanese Plum Yew.

It is intended to act as a replacement for the big juniper shrub which seems to be dying out.

Sticking with car dependence is a failure of imagination, particularly when the wide range of benefits of ending car dependence is so clear.
