To close out the year, here's a new edition of the History of Human Connectivity timeline, first published 2015. After nearly ten years, this is still fascinating to me. Lots to learn from the ancients and their wisdom. #emergecode www.slideshare.net/slideshow/em...

Trump craves global recognition but ironically he doesn’t himself realise the contradiction when he then rails against global institutions like the Nobel Prize and the UN. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... This award is right and just for the world. We increasingly need to come together. This is how.

This is very interesting. And points to an interesting and productive use of LLMs for certain forms of modeling social behavior.

This Atlantic analysis echoes the long convo I had recently with a European researcher who maintains that social media cannot be fixed because the problem lies in its very infrastructure and human nature cannot deal with it. I increasingly think he is correct. arstechnica.com/science/2025...

A day in the Portland war zone

The Portland War Zone isn't for everyone but at least the chaos is locally sourced.

Absolutely love this. Humans maybe aren’t that fucking clever.

This is just incredible

A tiny, tagged Monarch butterfly has flown from Southern Ontario in Canada to *Oklahoma* in a couple of weeks, as part of their migration

And they haven't got google maps open on their phones either, they just know where to go

One significant - & dangerous - thing to watch for is professional commentators objecting to words rather than examining the evidence. It's pearl-clutching & cowardly, obviously, but also a deliberate attempt to avoid confronting exactly what they themselves are facilitating and often cheering on.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

Sometimes it’s effective…he’s being played. I don’t mind either him or Starmer kissing this creep’s ass if it softens him up a bit and we can get what we want.

I wonder what things would be like if the media facilitated equal coverage for each one of them. But it doesn’t.

The media are highly complicit in this and an increasingly disturbing liability to the quality of life for each and every one of us.

No sudden rupture is now required for the far right to take power in this country. For what we're seeing is a steady normalisation of extremists by the Conservative and Labour Parties, BBC, Telegraph, Mail and others. A shift once considered unthinkable beings to look acceptable, even inevitable.🧵

The media’s bias against fair representation is absolutely abhorrent.

A brilliant read.

I wrote about all the lived experiences and strange structures of modern society — many of which we take for granted — that were literally impossible for all previous generations of Homo sapiens. www.forkingpaths.co/p/we-are-dif...
We are different from all other humans in history
Countless experiences that have become routine for us are unprecedented in the history of our species. Here's why that matters.

The Daily Fail will clutch at any straw they can to whip up some febrile right wing fantasy and anti BBC dog whistle, even an overweight straw that happens to be the worst dancer in the entire history of the programme. He was appallingly bad!
