So I'm basing most of this off getting into a big artist alley discord, and the rules they follow to get in are the same rules as big cons that do artist alley. I think these rules have been in place for a while- any artist who uses logos/names got permission from the ip holders and give them a cut.

I generally completely get it, you basically need to draw fan art that can be labeled as parody if anyone should ask questions. Makes total sense to me as a protection.

But yea that last part is what gets me! I feel like using a fragment to song lyrics cant be copy written?

If anyone who follows me has also had to work around all of this for conventions, I would love to hear from you with how you generally handle this. Bonus points if you're like me and love making posters with typography, I'd love to hear how you still do that without brand identifiers.

The only thing I don't quite get is not being able to use song lyrics/track titles. So if I make a Spongebob thing that doesn't have his name on it but maybe it has "Are ya Ready, Kids?" on it, can I be sued? I don't understand how that points out the IP harder than the character itself.

I'm both excited and bummed by this, as my ultimate goal in life is to be paid to make posters for movies and animation, etc.

But I really love the idea of leaning so hilariously hard into an entire bootleg aesthetic and brand. That would be a really fun challenge.

I will be making an "end of days" sale of the pieces that fit this category that will be so epic for anyone who ever wanted one of my posters. It's going to be so relentlessly affordable! I have so many to get rid of now!

Having done research into how Artist Alley works at the bigger conventions, I've figured out that a good chunk of my work/prints are going to have to be reworked or taken off market entirely. Totally understandable and willing to play the no logos/names game, but it does make me hate ai SO MUCH MORE

ALSO! If I go all in on tabling- I want to try and enact an east coast PA/NJ specific community fund of comiccon artists. I think this could be amazing and I think it could be a possible way for artists to really help each other push forward.
artbyrbarr.bsky.social
I have had a mega realization that in order for me to table at all the big conventions of the east coast that I'd want to do and WOULD make money doing, I can't have a full time job w/full time job hours. The schedule to do those shows makes no sense to have a FTJ.

This is both AMAZING and SCARY.

Look I know it's all corporate IP, but it is WILD having comic company crossovers in our lord 2025. This really feels like the days before everything had shareholders become the business.

Just announced at NYCC! A new Vertigo series from Grace and I about fandom, obsession... and parasocial chaos :)
the cover for Fanatic, a new series from DC vertigo by Hannah Templer and Grace Ellis. The cover depicts a woman cast half in shadow, looking back over her shoulder in a look of surprise as she is caught holding a shovel and wearing a tattered costume in a wooded area. The colors are in two tones of blue and red

Okay, maybe the average viewer can't tell and doesn't care. But why the fuck would SOMEONE WHO MAKES ART hand that process off to a machine? The big question here is, why don't YOU care?

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Jim Lee openly disparaging AI in no way guarantees anything, no one knows what the future of AI is and no one knows who will be in charge at DC Comics down the line. But I think it's important that a popular artist publicly shot AI down. Fans and artists ignorant of or using AI need to hear this.

I want it to be absolutely clear and understood that it is my core belief that people who want stuff like this, people who fight for stuff like this, should in any reasonable reality, lose their ability to co exist in society with the rest of us. Failed attempts that need to be thrown away.
