Tension is created by anticipation, juxtaposition, questions, and conflicts.

All of these things create structure.

When you use a recipe, if you understand the science behind it, you can make ingredient swaps or create something new. I think the same is true of fiction.

We control Pace through Cadence, Transitions & Tone.

Lens is about Context. Who is writing it? Who are you writing it for? Who is experiencing it?

Order is about sequence. Where do we start and stop? When do we give information? What are the connections between things?

I think narrative structure is created through Pace, Lens , Order, and Tension.

The various recipes for plots out there have all of these. I don't think there's anything wrong with using a recipe.

I also think that saying they ARE structure means that we are always using someone else's recipe.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.

So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

Thread, and related to a conversation with an old friend (and one of the best execs of the cable era) who said "These streaming bosses don't understand, there's no formula to a hit show, but there is a recipe."

16/105: MARVEL AND DC PRESENT THE UNCANNY X-MEN AND THE NEW TEEN TITANS (1982)

Kurt Busiek and Phil Jimenez have both told me this was their favorite crossover comic, and I can see how influential it is even now. It's a significant entry in the philosophical camp of omitting dimensional portals.

Ok, I keep getting asked about how to complain about Kimmel.
The best way to complain that will have the biggest impact?
See if you have a Sinclair or nexstar station in your area.
2. Watch the local newscast tonight or some time this week.
3. Note the companies that bought tv adverts.
4. Call them and let them know you will boycott them until they quit supporting that media company.
Trust me. I worked in tv for 45 years.
Nothing you do will have greater impact.

I did not know how much I needed to hear Jeff Bridges say, “Nine Inch Nails, man” until just now.

Now I just need to hear him say, “Trent Reznor was able to compose this IN A CAVE. WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!”
