'Rusty Stream and White Pebbles,' was painted in the late autumn of 1921, a year after Félix Vallotton chose to spend his winter months in Cagnes. Used to the low, grey skies of Normandy, he was struck by the brilliance of the light in this part of France.

Llech-y-Drybedd, Pembrokeshire for #TombTuesday
A neolithic burial chamber, looking a bit like a large stone mushroom, sits in a green field that is peppered with the yellow of dandelions. It faces a sunset, the sky streaked with gold, cream, and blue.

'Blackwell's Island.' (1911) Edward Hopper was drawn to New York's East River, painting it several times between 1911 and 1935. This picture is his first depiction of Blackwell's Island which sits in the East River between the Manhattan and Queens.

Had the pleasure of seeing this incredible digital reconstruction of medieval Barrow-upon-Trent at a heritage event this weekend. It's kinda mesmerising. Love this level of detail. Grab a cuppa and give it a watch!

I'm on Platform 14 at Manchester Piccadilly. Might just stick The Manics' Holy Bible on, channel my inner 19 year old and have an existential crisis of self. Platform 14 very definitely lends itself to that sort of thing....

#5debutalbums8084 The Beat - I Just Can't Stop It (1980) There's a warmth to The Beat that is missing from some of their new ska contemporaries. They draw from a wider range of influences as well but share an awareness of national & personal politics. A potent combination. #MusicSky

A page from my little nature sketchbook project that I work on from time to time.

This page is all about the dog rose, although I actually prefer the rose hips to the dog rose itself.

Stanley Spencer painted a number of landscapes in and around Maidenhead in Berkshire, of which this work from 1939 is a notable example. It was a rural area of rolling countryside not far from his home in Cookham and where he first went to art college before going to the Slade.

I'm increasingly struck by the digital literacy gap at all ages. There is a huge amount of digital exclusion, some of it by happenstance, some of it by misguided design.

And it is, of course, only ten years out from the actual timeline of general dystopia we now live in. So, pretty accurate all told.

Watched Rear Window, Heretic and The Running Man at the weekend. TRM was ridiculously entertaining.

Particularly enjoyed seeing Jesse Ventura sashaying across the screen as 'Captain Freedom'. I'm looking forward to the new version by Edgar Wright.
A screenshot from The Running Man, showing Arnie with the game show host, played brilliantly by Richard Dawson (no, not the Geordie folk singer of UFOs).

Designer Christopher Dresser, dreamed of creating an art colony in Middlesbrough. Though overshadowed by William Morris, he was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement. Dresser pioneered some of the first designer labels in ceramics, wallpaper, glass and textiles. In 1879 he 1/3

I hadn't realised the excellent Scientist and Socialist Steven Rose had died back in July. I was fortunate to meet him in London in 1998, and his life and work are definitely worth checking out.

Some more views of the Grey Stone in its context. ❤️
The Grey Stone in its context on a hillside adjacent to woodland and a large isolated tree. A view of the Greystone looking towards Almscliffe and Harewood House. The back of the Grey Stone. A side view of the Grey Stone showing more cup marks.

The Grey Stone of Harewood looking fabulous today for #StandingStoneSunday as it gazes out over Wharfedale, towards Almscliffe Crag.
A large stone with concentric circle marks sits in the middle of a field, set against a bright sky and treeline . A long line of cup marks on the stone, with blue sky above.

Dreaming of this still and bright June day at the top of Castle Crag, Borrowdale. Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive, etc, etc.
A summer, bright sky scene taken from the top of Castle Crag, the lowest of the Wainwrights. It contains, jagged upright stones, clearly placed by walkers, green trees and a view across Borrowdale, to rolling, craggy Lake District hills.

"The wallpaper was busier maybe, the world was browner, but essentially it was the same world, where telephones were answered with a string of digits and time flowed begrudgingly forwards like gravy."

I wrote about my favourite sitcom of all time.

Eugène Jansson's painting from 1898 depicts the large expanse of water in central Stockholm known Riddarfjäden. Jansson was one of the most significant artists in the last years of the 19thC to create a style of painting that reflected the essence of Scandinavia.
