Review: Hazelthorn

In terms of The Secret Garden influences, this is not a retelling, but it has influences. This is definitely dark, and I could not read this too close to bedtime, but the writing is so beautiful and immersive.

On Gothic Novels

I always say that "Gothic novels are all about spooky vibes." For several years now, I've had the intention to finally write a post on Gothic novels, mainly so I had something to link back to internally whenever I try to talk about a Gothic novel. So here's a longread.

BREAKING: Our client Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained by ICE in retaliation for livestreaming law enforcement activity, will be deported tomorrow to El Salvador.

Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press.

Review: All of Us Murderers

This was everything I want in a gothic romance, and I had a wonderful (and anxious) time waiting for Zeb to expose the murderer and escape with his true love.

It's never too late to learn something new.
It's never too late to discover the secret language of trees.
It's never too late to wrap yourself in moss & malice and become the forest horror that timid folk whisper about in the dark.

I got laid off yesterday (pretty sure it's because it was the end of the quarter) and I gotta say, it's definitely ~interesting~ starting unemployment on Day 1 of a government shutdown

Review: Queer Enlightenments

In all, this was a well written and easily accessible history book (is this pop history? not sure) that offers what I think are new perspectives on a few famous people and effectively shows that queer people have always attempted to create a found family.

If we could get ICE to focus on the spotted lanternflies instead that’d be dope.

Signs of approaching Autumn:
- dark fairies return from their summer vacations
- forest gloom takes on an orange hue
- moss awakens from slumber to devour unwary hikers
- garden gnomes sharpen their fangs
- the twig witch inflicts her pumpkin-spiced curse upon the land once more

There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

Reactions like this are why I wrote my article. I presented his comments IN CONTEXT, and provided tons of receipts.

Charlie Kirk was not a civil person.

My advice to people, as it has been since the USENET days, is simply this: Everything that can be made public on the Internet one day will be made public. Say what you want and what you feel is necessary, and remember it will be found.

"Only post comments that you'd feel comfortable reading aloud in a courtroom" is a recent meme I read and a good policy in general.

1. In the immediate aftermath of Charlie Kirk's shooting, the WSJ laundered claims that "transgender symbols" were found with the shooter's gun.

Now, a press conference reveals that NO such symbols were found.

WSJ owes a full retraction and apology.

Press Conference: No "Transgender" Or "LGBTQ" Symbols Found At Kirk's Shooting
Yesterday, several media outlets claimed or strongly implied that "transgender symbols" were found at the scene of the gun used by Charlie Kirk's shooter. This turned out to be false.

Too bad the GOP effectively criminalized studying how information moves online and news orgs laid off and demonized all the reporters who covered the burgeoning online accelerationist performative death cults. All of that work was somehow "censorship" that needed to be stopped. Now we're here.

Folks, remember: this is an ongoing, criminal investigation about a deeply inflammatory public figure. There are going to be a bunch of stupid shitty rumors and conspiracies about it. Err on the side of caution amplifying anything that isn’t coming directly from those in charge of the investigation

The fact that right-wingers commit the vast bulk of domestic terrorism in the US is well-established by numerous expert investigations & reports.

But the right *accuses* the left more often, makes more *noise* about it, so they've bullied reporters into framing this as a "both sides" problem.

Review: Ladies in Hating

If it's not clear, I loved this book. And if you also love Gothic novels or wished that Ann Radcliffe or Northanger Abbey were more gay, this is the book for you.

How is it possibly OK to anyone, Republican or Democrat, for the President of the fucking United States to be publicly declaring war on cities in his own country?
