The IRS is laying off people during the shutdown, even though it was rehiring staff it previously fired because it was so shorthanded.
This one stands out because firing IRS employees costs the government money, since they bring in about $6-8 for every dollar spent on tax enforcement

🇧🇪 Belgium will receive its first four F-35s from the US on October 13, clearing the way for transferring F-16s to Ukraine, Defense Minister Theo Francken confirmed. The move fulfills a 2023 pledge to send jets once Belgium’s F-35 fleet was operational.

This morning in 1957, a B-47 departing Homestead AFB (about 25 miles south of Miami, Florida) for Wheelus Air Base, Libya, as part of a large alert exercise crashed and burned in a field roughly 3,800 feet from the end of the runway after the pilot chose to take off with a flat right outrigger tire.

I remember sitting in a room listening to Scholz advisor Wolfgang Schmidt blather that Germany couldn’t possibly send Ukraine tanks because there’d be German iron crosses painted on them and then Russia would say Germany was at war with Russia.
We’ve come a long way.
