my main takeaways from listening to the Supreme Court oral argument today are

-the writing is on the wall for the Voting Rights Act
-the Republican justices are now throwing racist spaghetti at that wall; they'll pass of whatever sticks as the opinion's rationale

The Conservative Justices Have So Many Ideas For How to Kill the Voting Rights Act
The Republican justices already know where they’re going. They just have to figure out which route they’re going to take to get there.

Permanent minority rule: "Republicans wouldn’t need to flip so many districts to deal an enormous blow to Democratic chances. Even in the seven-to-eight-seat scenario, Democrats might need to win the popular vote by five percentage points to merely have a 50-50 shot to win the House."

Aside from losing many Democratic seats, Black representation in Congress will probably drop from around 14% of seats (nationally representative) to maybe 7 or 8% (not representative)?

and two other pieces that are supposed to be responses to Winant but whom in my opinion don't really engage with what he says and instead critique a caricature of marxism
budgetmotelabyss.bsky.social
Are other Marxists going to contribute to this LPE monopoly/anti-trust forum?
budgetmotelabyss.bsky.social
Its more that it seems like the two most vocal non academic institutions that have courses here in the states are either premised on opposing a marxist strawman or have either the kind of theory courses they have in uni's or ones that based on the more prominent recent approaches to Marxism

I dunno if i have a list of what should be taught.
budgetmotelabyss.bsky.social
Probably not good that the more interesting approaches to Marx and critical theory that emerged post 2008 don't seem to be taught in any of these online or in person alternatives to higher education that have cropped up.

What would it look like for a bunch of jetski dealer jihadists to secure the monopoly over the legitimate use of force while they rewrite your kid's textbooks to show Jesus invented dinosaurs with the help of Prime energy? I dunno man ask Florida and stop thinking they're backwards. They're ahead!

As always--the south is the nation's weathervane. Very good chance we don't get a real budget for the rest of this presidential administration.

If you make "controversial statements" outside of classroom, that the President of the university dislikes, you can be summarily fired even if you are tenured.

NEW: “Racketology and the Development of Competition.”
In this reply to Mac Parker’s “Economic Limits of Racketology,” Jack Barrett argues Horkheimer offers an expanded concept of competition + a preemptive critique of Baran & Sweezy’s theory of monopoly!

People should spend less time talking about what they (claim to) have read with strangers online and more time reading stuff and discussing it with people they respect, face to face.
