there comes a moment about five minutes after encountering a lost dog when you stop actively looking for a panicked owner and start to imagine a life with the dog. which makes the owner’s eventual appearance pretty bittersweet

This is a deeply unsurprising response, but I will repeat it yet again: we—DC residents—are unified in stating that we want federal agents and the National Guard out of our city, and they do not keep us safer. This has always been about control, not public safety.
US Defence Secretary Hegseth: Trump has asked for 500 additional troops to be deployed to Washington, DC, after two National Guard members were shot.

Policing in the United States is an irretrievably fascist project and we won’t get out of our current tangle with brutal autocracy until that is generally recognized and there are multiple efforts to adequately address it.
From the MN Society for Professional Journalists: St. Paul police shot three photojournalists (MPR, Reuters, Sahan Journal) with "less lethal" munitions during an ICE operation yesterday. One had to go to the hospital. They say they were specifically targeted by St. Paul police.

As a teacher and researcher, generative LLMs have significantly decreased my productivity in daily tasks (made them worse/harder), and I think that’s true for most people in those very common fields.

I am in awe of everyone who can create and produce right now when simply existing in *gestures around* is so hard. Enjoying those creations had made my day to day better 💖

(Meanwhile, I am hoping one day I'll get my spark back; it could happen!)

About 95% of household pet dogs would benefit from this and it’s super easy!

Here’s a good explanation, a simple version in a free app, and a link to the original veterinary protocol by Karen Overall.

What a lovely essay, full of hard-won wisdom. I wish those of us in academia spent a larger portion of our time thinking and talking about this kind of stuff, in this clear and earnest manner, both with each other and with our students.

This sucks for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that Brett Ratner (a serial sex pest) fucking sucks at directing Jackie Chan action scenes youtu.be/Z1PCtIaM_GQ

Can you imagine a US President setting up this kind of focused, participatory, public transition rather than outsourcing everything to the usual party hacks and “think tanks” and expecting people to treat their inauguration like an employee-appreciation pizza party?
Sooo many folks I’m excited to work with on Mamdani’s technology transition committee. All hands on deck to bring the Affordability Agenda to life: childcare, housing, transportation.

While its easy to get swept up in personality, this is a group focused on peoples real needs. LETS KEEP THE FOCUS.

Abolish Marvel Studios and transfer control of their full budget over to Alex Cox, Charles Burnett, and Lizzie Borden to do with as they please.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

-DHS agents lied about killing Silverio Villegas Gonzalez
-IL Dems caved to RW law and order rhetoric and built a surveillance state using ALPRs
~1 yr ago we sent a Giving Tuesday email to our tiny mailing list shortly after starting our own publication.

In the time since, we have been overwhelmed by how many of you find our work worth supporting.

No email this time around. But if you'd like to support indie media today, here's how:

Like, journalistically.

And then knifes him to death in the middle of 5th avenue.

Burn it all down.

This is who cops are. Abolishing ICE and CBP is not enough. We need a full reckoning for every single institution in the criminal punishment system.
Emmanuel, a 15-year-old with intellectual disabilities, wandered away from his mom’s fruit stand in October.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.

When the prison guards went on strike, many inmates said they were doing so to preserve their ability to do things like this.
A @nytimes.com investigation has found that state prison guards have been credibly accused of engaging in such behavior — putting inmates in restraints and then assaulting them — far more often than was previously known.

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

Zohran is probably tactful enough not to talk about it publicly but I bet this whole thing is insanely weird for him
