@phillymag.com // THE EAGLES OF HEART MOUNTAIN (2021) // came in third on Jeopardy once but actually played pretty well
Probably not a great sign for America that this is what they’re showing in taxis these days

I haven't seen the U.S. exert its will over Uruguay like this since the 1973 coup of Juan María Bordaberry

If you're following the Michelin Guide announcements and thought "huh, what's the deal with Provenance?" have I got the story for you:
Provenance Is Philly’s Most Ambitious Restaurant — If It Can Survive
Chef Nich Bazik has ruffled feathers — and spent a ton of cash — in his audacious quest to build a Michelin-grade restaurant more or less from scratch. Is that what Philadelphia wants?

I have been thinking about this line today, on the value of editors, from the late great John Bennet, for no reason in particular.

I've worked full-time at six different media companies over my career and I don't think I can think of a single writer-writer relationship that hasn't ended in just spectacularly explosive move-across-the-country fashion.

The Trump administration’s economic policy is “you don’t really *need* Christmas now, do you?”
Fox guest on how to save money during the holidays:

"Remember, adults don't need gifts. Focus on the people in your life who are aged 3 to 18. Grandma doesn't need slippers. If they don't live by you, don't get them a gift."

Honored to have an excerpt from @johnlingan.bsky.social's exceptional new book in this month's @phillymag.com. I learned a lot about Questlove in this story, and I suspect you will too:
How Questlove Became the Defining Drummer of His Generation
John Lingan's new book Backbeats: A History of Rock and Roll in Fifteen Drummers, traces the Roots drummer’s journey from Philly prodigy to genre-shaping innovator.

I know this is well outside the point, but from an editorial management standpoint dropping all those photography and videography resources into just a 2,500-word story doesn't seem like the best use of a budget!

Want to run a street festival in Philly? You'll probably have to pay the police department for security. That is...unless you know someone.

Great reporting from @ryanbriggs.bsky.social and @maxmmarin.bsky.social.
Philly street festivals are shutting down over rising police overtime costs. But some groups don’t have to pay.
Philly elected officials, police-connected groups, and street festival organizers who cut special deals are exempt from tens of thousands dollars in city event fees inked to street festivals.

Bad news: the Residence Inn on Juniper has instinctively started using it as valet parking hours after completion. Not camera-enforceable without adding Juniper to the list

Spending every night for two weeks straight assuring my first grader that Pennywise is not, in fact, real because some terrible parent let his classmate watch It almost drove me to the point of felony assault.
One thing I wasn’t prepared for as a parent was how much time I’d have to spend triaging damage done indirectly by other kids’ shitty parents.

The first one-cent coin was designed by Ben Franklin in 1787, so it's fitting that the final one will be produced right down the street.
