The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

I am straight-up going to have nightmares about this
In the video Smith posted online, he said Neuralink engineers had started using language models including ChatGPT and Grok to serve up a selection of relevant replies to questions, as well as options for things he could say in conversations going on around him. One example that he outlined: “My friend asked me for ideas for his girlfriend who loves horses. I chose the option that told him in my voice to get her a bouquet of carrots. What a creative and funny idea.”

These aren’t really his thoughts, but they will do—since brain-clicking once in a menu of choices is much faster than typing out a complete answer, which can take minutes.

Five minutes ago I was blissfully unaware of the fact that Elon has progressed to the human experimentation stage of Neuralink.

I was going to post a screenshot of David Archer from Mass Effect while he was plugged into the Geth but actually they were all too fucking horrifying so iykyk I guess

Worth noting that from the very start, Musk pitched Neuralink as an AI-human interface (this is from 2020)

www.technologyreview.com/2020/08/30/1...
“On a species level, it’s important to figure out how we coexist with advanced AI, achieving some AI symbiosis,” he said, “such that the future of world is controlled by the combined will of the people of the earth. That might be the most important thing that a device like this achieves.”

How brain implants would bring about such a collective world electronic mind, Musk did not say. Maybe in the next update.

Ok, Final ep of my sprint to rewatch all of Buffy!

I really think Chosen knocks it out of the park in most ways. It answers the central big problem of the show, which is that it’s entirely unfair to demand one girl give up her life and fight until she’s dead.

running the government like you just did a leveraged buyout but the private equity holders are breathing down your neck and you're not very good at this

It's in the liminal state that you're most psychologically vulnerable to anything that promises a return to structure, an escape from the dark corridors back into the bustle of crowds and normality.

And interestingly, there *are* monsters in the liminal state, the dark places between other places.

It's in this liminal state that you're most vulnerable to a monster persuading you.

What happens then, is you somehow bump into another person also wandering the quiet corridors, and form a community

This is called "normative communitas," a camaraderie that exists among people who find themselves in the same liminal space they thought they were alone in.

An interesting concept in anthropology is liminality.

Liminality is just the temporal version of finding yourself in a liminal place. When you're right on the cusp of a life milestone, not quite before or after it.

I came of age during the early years of the war on terror, so I’ve become fairly resigned to Australian foreign policy being oriented entirely towards pleasing the US.

But I’m flabbergasted that there’s been no course correction this year. Like not even a little rhetorical distancing. Incredible.

Sauron greeting the returning Nazgûl at Mount Doom, c2024, colorized
The image shows Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump shaking hands while facing each other. RFK Jr., on the left, has gray hair and is wearing a blue pinstripe suit with a white shirt and dark tie. Donald Trump, on the right, has blond hair and is dressed in a dark blue suit with a white shirt and red tie. They are standing against a backdrop of fireworks, which fill the background with bright, scattered bursts of light.

Should the New York Times be sold to Pennysaver and its editors sent to work in Amazon warehouses? It depends on who you ask.

AUS Foreign Minister Penny Wong's fawning praise of Trump is vomitous. No mention by Wong of the billions of dollars of arms provided to Israel by the USA for its genocide in Gaza? Srsly?! This is abhorrent commentary from Wong. 😔 #auspol #USPolitics #NobelPeacePrize #GazaGenocide

Israel cannot dominate 6 million Palestinians forever without granting them equal rights and freedom; ie. Israel can be Jewish or democratic but not both. This is the contradiction at heart of the Zionist project.

🧵 If this peace deal is successful, we'll be back at the perpetual statemate that characterised the status quo ante. Israel will continue to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank, it will continue to control Gaza's borders and we will be no closer to Palestinian statehood.

Like two days after Oct 7 a bunch of far-right twitter accounts pivoted to pro-Palestinian content; some got a *lot* of traction on progressive Twitter. Tucker et al weren’t as quick to sniff out opportunity but it’s the same fucking grift. Don’t let them pipeline you!

No, you do not have to hand it to Tucker Carlson, MTG, or any white supremacist who suddenly found compassion for Palestinian children
