Farrowing crates are a terrible, uncivilised system which causes suffering for mothers and piglets. The new Bill proposes to continue this practice, but if we work together and make a submission👇🏻 we can force a change. www.spca.nz/advocacy/far...
Speak Up for Mother Pigs: Say ‘No’ to Farrowing Crates
Make a submission to show the Government that New Zealanders want to see the end of farrowing crates. Every submission counts - the Government is hoping we won't rally in time. Let’s prove them wrong.

Solstice was sometimes affectionately called "The Egg Cannon" & was the matriarch of the 'Celestial dynasty'-many descendants carry celestial-themed names. Cloacitis continues to be a curse in this population. Research is ongoing.😔

It was a long haul but I did stop at the fur seal colony outside Kaikoura (it's compulsory!!). It was a slow day in the colony - lots of resting, not much action. And a supervising gull.
Several fur seals have hauled out and are napping on rocks. There are larger rocks behind them and a solitary gull on those rocks appears to be watching over them.

Nutmeg is wise. I'm sure @biobabbler.bsky.social would endorse...

Nutmeg suggests that instead of facing another Monday you should take a nap.

I drove from Lake Ohau through to Picton. The Interislander check in was early & it was the start of Daylight Saving - I wasn't sure about making it to Picton in time if I stayed overnight (as I usually do) in Kaikoura. On the way I said hello to the giant fish in Rakaia, as you do.
In the small town of Rakaia in the South Island, Aotearoa. Like quite a few small towns, it has an iconic symbol - in this case a giant salmon. It is in a park in the middle of an area that has tussocks, trees and a walking area with seats.

If you don't know @jeremymberg.bsky.social you should. He's a hero for our times. Scientist, former institute director at #NIH, former editor-in-chief for @science.org. He is what public service is about. None of the current Administration leaders even come close to his contribution to science.

I love this place! It's a very cool spot to wander around, and in a lovely setting.
The famous sign on the gate to Bilbo's hobbit hole - 'no admittance except on party business'. The iconic water mill at Hobbiton - a thatched brown building at the side of a lake, seen from across the water. In the foreground are some grasses on the other side of the lake and a seat. In the background are hills with some pine trees.

On October 10, 2024 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially declared the Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris) extinct. Congratulations, stupid humans. 😔😠

Kind of nuts to come back to Auckland from 5 months over winter in an alpine village and have one of my first thoughts be "golly, it's cold". Makes me realise how well insulated log houses are.

I was able to stay up to date on a lost, very young puppy about half an hour away and, when people searching hadn't turned her up after a day (in fairly cold weather), I drove my puppy-loving dog out to search.

He found her in 15 minutes, alive and kicking.

Two very neat circular holes have been drilled (by a bird), one five inches above the other, into a very light grey snag (standing dead tree, this one sans bark), as well as many very small, equally sized and perfectly circular holes (presumably made by insects).

Visible to the left of the tree, the rest of the forest is visible, including golden yellow understory plants (because, autumn) in the sunlight. It is a very peaceful scene.

In important breaking news from Aotearoa, Millie is up for adoption - she is described as a “quiet lawnmower” with a gentle soul and a story of survival. 🥰
www.nzherald.co.nz/the-country/...
Millie the sheep, found wandering. Obviously has not had a haircut for a very long time - a huge fleece. But she looks happy. Millie after a shear. All that fleece gone - and I swear she looks even happier!

Will be pretty much off line for 7 days or so until my new internet setup is available. I need to use the limited connectivity I have for work. I will be back! I will try to keep up with the news, such as it is, and trust you will all behave in the meantime. 🤣
