I’m (trying) to take a break from The Horrors so I’m not going to be around much for an unknown amount of time. If someone could End The Horrors I’d appreciate it.

A thread on the Red Crab Mass Migration. Biology is sooooo cooool
Why did the red crab cross the road?
The answer is sex.
You're seeing an island-wide booty call.

This is a MATING MIGRATION. These red crabs (Gecarcoidea natalis) are meeting up on the beach to make lots of little crabs.

It's Crab Spring Break (literally).

My cats love these toys.
I am not doing a special sale in my shop this weekend because everything is already at cost, I’m not able to ship until next week, and I didn’t make some of the extra stuff I intended. But cat toys and goat totes are available! Bookmarks! A couple of original paintings!

This phenomenon is on my travel wish list

This is especially a problem on The Cape in Massachusetts due to the shape of the peninsula- turtles headed south run into land and don’t know to go north to get back the open ocean. In that state contact the New England Aquarium in Boston.

A conservation success story. In 1967 the American alligator was listed as an endangered species and considered at risk of extinction. Now there are between 3 and 5 million (estimates vary).

Despite the large population there are few “attacks” and fewer deaths (less than 2 a year).
🐊American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in Hartley's Crocodile Adventures.

Max size: males 4.6 m (15'1"), females 3 m (9'10").

Found from North Carolina in the northeast across to Texas and occasionally even into Mexico.

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.

A sweet folktale to start your day
Here is The Maiden of the Dawn & the Firebird for the 7th #FolktaleWeek2025 prompt dawn.

A Prince is prophesied to fly away on the Firebird on his 15th birthday & marry the Maiden of the Dawn. So the King imprisons him in a luxurious tower prison & holds an elaborate 15th birthday, without him.

Lettuce take a break and enjoy some crunchies from porcupine Thistle! 🥬 North American porcupines love nibbling leafy snacks, those sharp teeth never stop growing, so all that crunching helps keep them healthy!

For Day 6 of #FolktaleWeek2025 prompt #FolktaleWeekStorm:

In the Gaelic mythology of Ireland, Scotland & the Isle of Man, the divine old woman, or hag, created the landscape itself and the storms and weather of winter. Known by many names, she is the Cailleach (literally the old woman or hag) or 🧵

Your regular reminder of what people who are against childhood vaccines (especially those that prevent deadly diseases) because they "might cause autism" are actually saying:

"We would rather a dead child than an autistic one."
CDC has overhauled its website to assert that “the claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim”

Good news (hopefully). Reducing or banning pesticides increase bird populations.

Remember almost all birds need to feed their babies insects. Pesticides reduce baby bird food and/or expose the babies to the pesticides. Either way - your "perfect" lawn is harming the birds.

I missed this thread 🧵 the first time around. Hippos are weird. Two words: Migrating Testicles.

Thread goes up and down from here.
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.
