I think a lot of people just didn't care and didn't think about it at all. I think this is a desperate marketing gimmick by Lays trying to create attention to gain back market share in a segment that is declining in sales.

This story has an untested theory that is taken as a given. If consumers knew that potato chips were made from potatoes, they would then buy more.

As a potato chip consumer, I actually don't give a rats ass that it is made from sliced potatoes. I care about the result.
