I guarantee, if they put Gillian Anderson front and centre of the Tron marketing instead of Jared Leto, it would have done better.

Honestly, I (and a couple of people I know) loved the visuals in the trailer and would have gone to this if it weren't for Jared Leto. He's actively off-putting.

‘TRON: ARES’ has earned $14.3M in its opening day at the domestic box office.

For comparison, ‘MORBIUS’ opened to $17.3M.

Jenny Nicholson tweet continues to not miss
@JennyENicholson

How come major film studios keep being like Jared Leto may have allegations, but at least he looks weird, stars in box office bombs, and is not a good actor

Ooh. This is really fun, and you can see @mandykathryn.bsky.social in an absolutely scene-stealing role.

Whether it’s Trump being fluffed by some doctor with no credibility, or Bryan Johnson’s claims of “having a biological age of 21” being unquestioningly reported, the press seem utterly unable to do any research before writing. These are not validated metrics. They are not real. It is meaningless.

It occurs to me that the Doctor's polyethnic identity in recent times recontextualises Peter Davison's casting in quite an interesting way.
(For context, although you'd be unlikely to guess it by looking at him, Davison's paternal family is Guyanese. He has close relatives who are visibly Black.)
Peter Davison, a fair-skinned blond man, as the fifth Doctor, circa 1982.

I'd love to learn more about the Cartoon Centre as a physical place - while it led to the cartoon museum, I can't find much info about it. Their website archive goes back to the early 2000s, but it's more about what it was doing then and future plans.

Brooker has one of the most unlikely careers going - the kind of trajectory that's just unthinkable these days.

It's a charity work, with 125 artists taking part to raise money for the London Cartoon Centre. It took place in the early 90s, but wasn't published until 1999. And while I'm a fan of a bunch of people in there, I really wasn't expecting to see @charliebrooker.bsky.social in the credits.

I generally like Omid Djalili but it's one thing to do the Riyadh gig, and another to whine about how you're actually doing something progressive and amazing and it's unfair everyone thinks you're an arsehole for it.

I'm fond of Psycho III, which he directed.

It's a cracking whodunit, written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins. And while the whole cast is great, Dyan Cannon steals most of it, and James Mason is brilliant in it - honestly, one of my favourite performances I've seen from him.

Just watched The Last of Sheila, which @rianjohnson.bsky.social recommended during his #LondonFilmFestival talk (which @scientits.bsky.social kindly invited me to). Very enjoyable and smart too - funny and nasty, and you can see how it influenced Glass Onion.
Left to right, James Mason, Raquel Welch, Joan Hackett, Ian McShane, Dyan Cannon and Richard Benjamin, all under a sign that reads 'Sheila'

Protestors in the United States of America really need to start including the full-stops/periods in "U.S." on their signs: with signs saying stuff like "HANDS OFF US BENEFITS" it's not immediately obvious whether they're based in the U.S.A. or Weatherfield.

I found a rarity the other day. A comic written by Alan Moore and drawn by @charliebrooker.bsky.social . With others, of course, but still - an unexpected name to see in something from the late 90s.
The cover to The Worm - "The Longest Comic Strip in the World", by 'Alan Moore and a galaxy of greats'.

The Crooked Medium's Guide to Murder is a spooky sapphic Victorian Murder Mystery.

It puzzled the industry a bit but readers have no difficulty with that genre description.

Steady 4.5 ⭐on Amazon.

ALT: A book cover - dark blue and gold - surrounded by the following aspects in matching Victorian lettering - spooky / Vicious Baronet / Spiritualist Scammers/ Hidden Crimes / older grumpy sapphics / snarky dock-lass/ twisty mystery / Lady in Danger/Queer Found Family

Cover

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder by Stephen Cox
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
A rich dark blue background, and a touch of mist. The text appears in gold in a gold rectangular frame, the font is old fashioned implying C19th century. The frame has three rondels or cameos each containing a picture. Top right is a golden bee brooch with the body and one wing streaked with red blood. Middle left is foxgloves, spires of small bell flowers in pink, white and purple. Bottom right is a dark brown medicine bottle, with a pale label. The word LAUDANUM is just visible.
There are pink highlights on some of the letters.
Taken together it is bold, mysterious, and Victorian

Imagine for a moment a world so dependent on data centers that every aspect of municipal infrastructure must be reshaped. Not around human need, but maintaining GPU farms that use exponentially more power and water with each build. Models are only growing, and our resources are only diminishing.
