I'm fond of Psycho III, which he directed.

It's a cracking whodunit, written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins. And while the whole cast is great, Dyan Cannon steals most of it, and James Mason is brilliant in it - honestly, one of my favourite performances I've seen from him.

Just watched The Last of Sheila, which @rianjohnson.bsky.social recommended during his #LondonFilmFestival talk (which @scientits.bsky.social kindly invited me to). Very enjoyable and smart too - funny and nasty, and you can see how it influenced Glass Onion.
Left to right, James Mason, Raquel Welch, Joan Hackett, Ian McShane, Dyan Cannon and Richard Benjamin, all under a sign that reads 'Sheila'

Protestors in the United States of America really need to start including the full-stops/periods in "U.S." on their signs: with signs saying stuff like "HANDS OFF US BENEFITS" it's not immediately obvious whether they're based in the U.S.A. or Weatherfield.

I found a rarity the other day. A comic written by Alan Moore and drawn by @charliebrooker.bsky.social . With others, of course, but still - an unexpected name to see in something from the late 90s.
The cover to The Worm - "The Longest Comic Strip in the World", by 'Alan Moore and a galaxy of greats'.

It's World Mental Health day. Part of the reason we set up this place is because inclusive, welcoming third spaces like this are important, especially in busy cities. What's a positive space in your area?

Honestly, it's been a bit of a quieter week or two than would be... ideal. If there's a book that's on your mind, we'd love it if you bought it from us! Email us, DM us, etc.

The Crooked Medium's Guide to Murder is a spooky sapphic Victorian Murder Mystery.

It puzzled the industry a bit but readers have no difficulty with that genre description.

Steady 4.5 ⭐on Amazon.

ALT: A book cover - dark blue and gold - surrounded by the following aspects in matching Victorian lettering - spooky / Vicious Baronet / Spiritualist Scammers/ Hidden Crimes / older grumpy sapphics / snarky dock-lass/ twisty mystery / Lady in Danger/Queer Found Family

Cover

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder by Stephen Cox
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
A rich dark blue background, and a touch of mist. The text appears in gold in a gold rectangular frame, the font is old fashioned implying C19th century. The frame has three rondels or cameos each containing a picture. Top right is a golden bee brooch with the body and one wing streaked with red blood. Middle left is foxgloves, spires of small bell flowers in pink, white and purple. Bottom right is a dark brown medicine bottle, with a pale label. The word LAUDANUM is just visible.
There are pink highlights on some of the letters.
Taken together it is bold, mysterious, and Victorian

Imagine for a moment a world so dependent on data centers that every aspect of municipal infrastructure must be reshaped. Not around human need, but maintaining GPU farms that use exponentially more power and water with each build. Models are only growing, and our resources are only diminishing.

"The consumers won't care if it's AI."

Ah yes, horror fans -- y'know, the people who famously ask "Are the FX Practical?!" about literally every movie -- definitely won't care that you're feeding them prompt-generated slop. Good call there.

It would be easy to reposition this headline as 'Billionaire author vows to keep interfering with Scottish democracy', which doesn't look too pretty.

The "set aside the art from the artist" thing in this case is moot. Harry Potter money now goes right to destroying the human rights of trans persons. A billionaire who got her ass kissed for two decades got a rebuke and now she's got to wreck the lives of others.

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

I *really* want more reporting on this because the book was pretty heavily vetted by lawyers in advance of publication….

This is so damn scary. The book claimed that Jeffrey Epstein was the one who introduced Donald and Melania. Now the CEO of Harper UK is out.

"My favourite writer is Terry Pratchett, but I think his ten honorary doctorates and choice to be an artist were worthless bullshit" is quite the position to unpack.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.
