Excitement on Harwich Beach yesterday: hundreds of Pointed Snails on the upper beach. First recorded here about 20 years ago, this is still the only Essex site so far as I am aware.

Keep going Zack - what you are doing is challenging and showing them up. The more they whinge like this, and they will, the more you are making the right impact.

Flat calm and windless at Rye Harbour this morning. A low blanket of cloud reflected the soft chimes of 100s of Golden Plover. They put me in mind of kindly ghosts calling lost loves. I wanted a benign mist to descend so I could just listen and not see.

Cockaynes Reserve today. Dull, but absolutely still and very warm. Checked dozens of Oak leaves, and for only my second time ever, I found all three common Neuroterus spangle galls (common Spangle, Smooth Soangle and Silk Button) on the same leaf. In fact, three such leaves!

Hi Richard, I have no more evidence personally, but I have been there only twice. DM me your email, and I'll ask Steve Rutherford to get in touch. I believe BTO are involved.

Autumn abstract...leaves in the garden.
Four images, close ups of parts of autumn leaves. Image 1 is a yellow leaf with black marking looking almost like patches of snakeskin. Image 2 is a bright green leaf with thick lines of soft brown. Image 3 has patches of green, yellow, orange and red, with grey patches appearing in areas that will become holes soon. Image 4 is a vivid pink leaf.

Nigel Farage accuses teachers of "poisoning our kids" on race issues.

Here's a reminder of what teachers and fellow pupils at Farage's own school remember of his own views on that subject.

But the naysayer bigots should be brought to justice for forcing their hate on a nation.

Yes, and yes just. Steve Rutherford has done good work there.

And Reeves' disgusting, dismissive comments today about 'microscopic' snails 'holding up' development just underline why. They may be small but they are rare, and indicative of high water quality. And for holding development that would not be needed if second/third/nth homes were forbidden.

Precious moment in the fleeting Wivenhoe sun this morning of a pair of German Wasps snatching an intimate moment... Really brought home the size difference. This is peak wasp mating time, with the male destined to die soon; the newly mated queens being the only ones to overwinter #criticalmoment

Attended an online talk yesterday from Samm (University of Guelph) Syprh’ing the Continents: Hoverflies, Our Unsung Agricultural Heroes video link below. I find it fascinating that such tiny insects migrate just as birds & butterflies do and the talked inspired me to find out even more. #syrphidae.

Rather than just supporting the aims of a political party (mostly Labour until now), after 65 years I just joined the Green Party. For my granddaughter, for my sanity, and for all life on the plant.

Hoverflies return to Ivy bush after storm Amy. Common Banded (Syrphus ribesii) and Drone fly (Eristalis tenax) #hoverflies #syrphidae but mainly its full of wasps. The wall facing the sun is covered in Asian Lady Beetles (Harmonia axyridis) all of different varieties.

Blustery day, isn't it? Here's the National Grid: Live generation data. Wind and solar are generating 74.2% of our electricity. Gas is generating 13.1%. And yet our household electricity prices are pegged to... the volatile price of gas. Which is the basis on which the right attacks... renewables.

That is a super fly obviously a mover north due to climate change. The patterns on the wings are stunning. Thanks for sharing.

@hoverflyspotter.bsky.social good to see you over here mate. To encourage you, here's my best fly ever (not a hover, sorry!) I photographed yesterday in Beth Chatto Gardens: Ectophasia crassipennis, a UK first for me!
