Time to make a pinned post!

Hi, I'm Chris, I'm an animator and gamedev 👋

I can't show any of my recent work-work so here's a compilation of some old personal work:

Yup. High fidelity narrative moments in AAA (which involve work from basically every gamedev discipline) are really expensive; adding a meaningful choice can potentially double the scope of what follows it.

So it's *very* impressive when it's done well in big budget games.

I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.

Pour yourself into your work only in the hours you're legally required to in your employment contract.

When you're off the clock build yourself a life outside of games.

It's much easier to handle the ups and downs of this industry when it's not your entire world.

Those of you who have been in gamedev for 5yrs+

What do you wish you knew before you joined the industry? What life lesson would you pass down to someone just joining today?

Personally, few things cut deeper as an artist than having your work referred to as Content.

Hi friends. Unfortunately, my time at Heart Machine is coming to an end. I’m seeking a new role and would appreciate your support. Saying goodbye to such a talented team is difficult, but I am excited for the next adventure. <3

I'll have more info soon.

Thanks everyone. Stay strong out there.

It is truly remarkable how universal the reaction has been to this news...nobody is distraught, everybody is just saying "lol, lmao" in unison

Elon: I'm going to make an AI-generated game

Gamedevs: Haha yess!

Elon: Wait, aren't you upset? I'm disrupting your industry!

Gamedevs: No no it's fine, go for it, I'm sure it will be a roaring success! Also you should invest heavily in this idea

Hi again, there is one week left of my contract with Blind Squirrel Games so I am officially looking for work again! I also now have 5 years experience as an animator! Which is pretty nifty.

Yeah sex is great but have you ever poked your nose into a random work thread you had no business participating in, realised it could affect what you are working on and flagged an issue, worried that you've jumped to conclusions, then had somebody say "oh yeah very good callout"?

RIP the middle of the games industry

Putting my old teacher hat on, I think it's still important to eventually complement that doing/practice with regular research/study, self-evaluation, and external feedback, but that is absolutely secondary to the "doing"
chrisyearn.bsky.social
We can't do exactly this with something like drawing or animation, or design, or writing, or whatever, but I think the general spirit of "start by doing, and do it a lot" and not waiting until you're "ready" is a good one
chrisyearn.bsky.social
He elaborated in this interview, saying he recommends beginners just focus on playing right away, even with other people, rather than starting with theory and formal practice and waiting until you're "good enough" to play

Great advice from legendary bassist Victor Wooten, I think there are lessons we can learn from this for teaching/learning other art forms too

Another long day of writing lengthy replies in Slack, then not sending them and reacting with a thumbs up emoji instead 👍

Sometimes, when objects have so many controls, it can be easier to plan it out in 2D. Then you can use that as reference and sculpt the poses in 3D to match your drawovers.
This is a live demo I animated in class this past term at Animschool
