Previously I was a generalist programmer in indie spending way too much time in VR

Massive crowd in Melbourne/Naarm today (in case you thought this movement was going to be placated with more colonisation). Until the occupation ends. Until Western war criminals and their enablers face justice. Until Palestine is free.

It might be the Sunday of games week but I still ran a 10k faster than I have in my life

I'm so used to Australia being more politically embarassing compared to NZ that this is a little unsettling

Pour yourself into your work only in the hours you're legally required to in your employment contract.

When you're off the clock build yourself a life outside of games.

It's much easier to handle the ups and downs of this industry when it's not your entire world.

Those of you who have been in gamedev for 5yrs+

What do you wish you knew before you joined the industry? What life lesson would you pass down to someone just joining today?

There are so many things in life you can still enjoy in your 30s without regrets but eating a Krispy Kreme donut then going on a 8k run is definitely not one of them.

Wait was EA’s big GenAI push a bid to convince potential buyers that it could lower operating costs after a purchase to help pay for debts??

They have like four whole game studios making the Battlefield series, you can’t run a CoD-competing juggernaut with automation.

Interesting section on EA's £55 billion takeover, I'm sure this is all gonna work out so well...
"The deal is a huge bet that artificial intelligence can significantly cut EA's operating costs, allowing the equity consortium to manage a large debt load on a company that historically carried limited net debt.
Al is already widely used across Silicon Valley to accelerate many kinds of computer programming. In games development, it can be used to replace voice actors and create backdrops and other assets, as well as automating play testing to avoid bugs before release."
"The investors are betting that Al-based cost cuts will significantly boost EA's profits in coming years, people involved in the transaction told the Financial Times."

I've kind of done it (bought a room of someone from someone planning to go to GDC that ended up not) but I knew the person I was getting the room off.

The difference is you understand the boilerplate code and can see if there's something wrong with it. If someone has only ever used AI might not have the skills to because they've never learnt the basics.

Firstly, gen Z saw our toxic workaholic bullshit and decided to do better.

Secondly, AI is ruining the ability for entry level workers to learn the fundamentals of their roles, if they're even lucky enough to get those roles to begin with.

Gen Z's employability problem
By Rachel Kleinman, Editor at Linkedin News ¿
Generation Z's values don't align with those of today's hiring managers, writes Suzy Welch, professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, in The Wall Street Journal. According to her team's analysis, just 2% of Gen Z members prioritize achievement, learning and an unbridled desire to work - the values companies prize most in new hires. That disconnect complicates an already challenging professional landscape for young Americans. Recent data shows that artificial intelligence automation is eliminating entry-level roles, a phenomenon that disproportionately affects Gen Z workers.

Melbourne International Games Week: I'm working like normal so I'll only be at a few events but I'll be *around*. Reach out if we should catch up and I'll make time.

(also no SXSW Sydney for me, completely dropped the ball, next year I promise)
